A Jefferson like this. It's a 1971-D and it seems to have raised areas on the reverse. Almost looks like water on the coin. Any ideas.

Looks almost like the surface on later SMS coins.

Lousy planchet. I have several halves and quarters that look the same way. Cool coin though.image

Orange peel from a worn out die.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I agree...not a planchet thing, it's a die thing. It's a very late die state coin, meaning that the coin was struck by a die that had struck many, many coins before it.

looks like huge flow lines (what produces luster) if i can find a pic. i have a merc that looks kinda like that.

here's the pic. of the merc, note the die crack running from bottom to top also a way to tell that the die was near the end of it's life.

Yup...again, a VLDS coin. In die variety collecting, the least valuable of all possibilities is a doubled die or RPM struck in VLDS.

Pretty interesting that they are full step coins. Would the operator reposition the dies to increase strike pressure to compensate for die-wear, creating the full steps? Also, if both sides show similar effect, could you assume both dies were late state, as is the case with my half? Dog once called the effect sunburst. Is that the name of the phenomenon?

    << <i>Orange peel from a worn out die. >>

That's what it is, orange peel surfaces. Learned the term early 90's. I used the term a few times in my recent nickel sale list over in the BST forum.

I find it interesting that with such a worn die the steps are still pretty much intact. I thought they'd long since be worn down.
