  • Great card, great Angel 3B!! Pulling a 9 won't be easy. Someone with PSA access to the pop report should "hit you with some digits!" (Sorry, I've been listening too much to Arsenio Hall!)

Good luck in your search. Perhaps, shoot an e-mail to this e-Bay seller who was unable to sell this lot:

    POP REPORT:
    2 - 8s
    2 - 9Q

Looks like the only 9 is with qualifiers. If one goes up for sale, we both will be probably be gunning for the common and confusing the rest of the world.

I just won a 1979 Bulk Vending case on Ebay. It is 8500 cards of only sheet E. I'm not sure if he's on that sheet, but if he is, I will submit some of them.

So, you just bought 8500 SheetE cards? image
  • I have been contemplating buying a 1979 vending box for grading purposes and was wondering if it's worth it. Out of 500 cards how many 9's and 10's could I expect?

Has anyone ever tried this? How have you done?

If you're wondering why I am choosing '79, it's because this was the first set I ever completed as a kid. I remember Nathan Hale being the last card I needed. I was in 7th grade at the time and a friend of mine who knew what I needed won it flipping and gave it to me.

Expect ZERO PSA 10's. Anything about that really makes it worth your while. As for expectations with 9s, it all depends on the centering. The centering in some unopened tends to run better than others, so it can often be a luck of the draw type thing. Also you have to ensure that the vending box has been kept in nice shape -- one blow to an outside corner of the box can wreck the corners of 20% of the cards inside. That being said, you should still end up with quite a few 9's.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I have opened 2 vending boxes in the last few months and I pulled what I thought were the best 10 stars and best 2 commons to test grading. I received no 10s and 1 9. It was Pete Rose, so that was a plus. I still believe that if I resubmitted these 8s a few would pull 9s, but overall the set is very condition sensitive and if you are hoping for a few 10s with 10% 9s I think you would be in for a surprise.
    Looking for 77 cloth 9s and 10s.
    54 Red Hearts
    and now 64 Stand ups
  • If one is to expect no 10’s why would anyone ever submit cards and ever expect to break even. At $8 per card a common card isn’t even worth the grading fee. Even if there was a special for $5 per card, it probably wouldn’t be worth it.

I guess this is something I won't consider doing after all.

    Thanks for the info.

  • I have busted several 1979 vending boxes, and received one 10. The others were a mix of 8's and 9's (I only sent in the stars so far as it's not economical to send in the commons). I don't think I would ever count on getting 10s from any submission.

    Looking for:
Any high grade OPC Jim Palmer
    High grade Redskins (pre 1980)
  • Would someone explain what a "cut card case" is? If memory serves me correctly, aren't these cases full of cards with centering problems?

    Thanks.

Zeppo, It's not very profitable to open a 1979 vending box. 10's are really tough and the last 9's I had from 1979 sold for about $10 each. I use the $6 bulk service so I make $4 per card and try to make it up in quantity. You can't get enough quantity from a vending box considering how much you have to pay for it. It would be a MUST for you to get some star card 9's (Ozzie, Rose, Ryan, etc..) to make any money off of a 1979 vending box and that's too big of a risk. Odd's are you would lose money on it. I bought that bulk case (8500 cards) for about what 1 box of vending box would cost (500 cards) so I am into each card for about 2.5 cents. I going to "cherry" pick the case and make a couple bucks per 9 and make the real money on any 10's I get but I have to limit the 8's to a bare minimum. Grading commons is a tough way to make some money, but it's fun to do. Here's a link to the case I bought:

Can someone explain the Vending Sheet thing to me? I'm assuming that the manufacturer prints up a sheets of cards, cuts them, then puts them all in that vending case. So if you by a case of vending boxes, you will get the same cards over and over. This ties back to a question I asked a few months ago about a 1982 vending box I bought and there was a lot of repitition of cards. Am I close on this?

  • I get a kick out of the auction location being Michigan and the seller listing Lance Parrish as a "Star" image I need some raw, colorful, focused commons and minor stars for my set. If you've got some "just-miss" type of 8's I'd be interested raw. They've just gotta be clean and focused. A hint of a touch or 65/35 doesn't bother me on the 79's. Email me when you break it if you want at maysfan24@yahoo.com.

As for what to expect from mid-late 70's stuff from vending...expect prescious little. If you get a nice box it's a brick of gold that will yield incredible results (invoices 764184 and 764185) I've also had some with less than a dozen "submittable" cards image Getting to know your sources and case numbers can be EXTREMELY helpful...

You made a logic jump here.

The point was when costing the business case for opening a 1979 vending box for purposes of grading, expect no 10s.

Where have you gone Dave Vargha

  • It is becoming obvious that no one thinks this is a cost effective endeavor.

    I appreciate the advice.

    Thanks all.

Creeper, vending cards came from the same places that wax pack and rack pack cards from, sheets that are cutting at the factory. There's no difference there. You will notice though that if you opened a lot of one years vending boxes, that they tend to come in a specific order. They're not just a random assortment. Sometimes you will two cards of a lot of them in the same box. That hurts for trying to pull the "big" card from the set because you only wind up with 25% of the set after you open the box.

I need to proof read my posts before submit them. My last post looked like I rode the short bus to school.
