  • Robert, just going on the assumption that there are no hairlines or that they are not excessive, I would grade the coin an MS63. image

That could make 64. Looks more like a 63 to me though.

MS 62... its an attractive coin, but I'm not sure it gets 63

MS62. I've got an MS63 that is nicer. The luster on the obverse is not strong enough to warrant a 63, and there are too many small hits in the central devices.

I like it at MS 61.7, +/- 0.5. a nice coin, not quite choice but better than 60.

Robert, I am going to have to say MS61. There are quite a few marks on liberty's face which I think would keep it below the 63 level. I give a lot of weight to the luster breaks in the obverse fields of these coins but I don't really see any luster on the obverse picture. Is the obverse picture a true likeness of the coin? if not could you take another picture?. The reverse does nothing to hurt the coins grade. I really like these coins please post pictures of more if you can. mike image

The luster on the obverse is not well represented in the picture as the lighting setup was non-existant (just a desk lamp). It does have full luster though.

P.S. Mike, I have a 1901-S which is nicer than this one IMO, which I'll post tomorrow. I have this one guessed at MS62 possibly 63 but I don't think so. I'll get my photography setup a little better set up for the other coin and post it tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Robert- I would really need to see a picture with the type of result the reverse picture has to give a more accurate grade. mike

Here is mine.. bought as NGC MS63, cracked out and now PCGS MS63. Note the difference in obverse marks in devices and fields, and luster. Now that I get a better comparison of the two coins, I am wavering between MS61 and MS62.

Nice coin. What's going on in the rim at 10:00 on the reverse?
  • darktonedarktone Posts: 8,437 ✭✭✭
That looks like part of the plastic holder.
  • BaleyBaley Posts: 22,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
the rim thing looks like an irregularity in the holder.

    nice coin, I give the '04 an MS63.500 +/- 0.499 image

Robert, here's a guess the grade thread I started a while back with some ANACS $5 gold coins. Click on the link for bigger pictures than those shown in the thread. The grades are posted towards the bottom. LINK . mikeimage

Baley - You have all required skills to grade at PCGS image

Robert - Darktone is correct. PCGS botched the liner in the holder and it has a small crimp. The coin is still secured well, so no issue. I got this coin in a Heritage Internet auction for bid price, so I was pretty happy.
