One suggestion....use brighter bulbs (70 watt or so) and cover the heads of the lamps with thin white paper to diffuse the light. You should see a dramatic difference in the outcome.

Excellent shots. I've just now finally gotten off my duff and started to get my setup together and have my first images to post tonight. The lighting was horribly inadequate, while I have two nice flexible table lamps I just bought from WalMart (which I avoid at all costs, but they did have the lights I needed and for only seven bucks too) I forgot to get bulbs so I shot the images with a single table lamp nearby. I still don't have a copystand so I just held the camera as still as I could LOL. I did discover that using a loupe with a large enough lens allows me to shoot right through it for some awesome close ups. If you have a loupe with a large lens try shooting through it - you'll find your camera focuses properly *through* the lens if you hold it about 3/4ths to one inch from the coin and keep the camera at the normal distance. Also try to avoid shooting coins inside the 2x2 like you did with the wheatie, it seems to have added a lot of distracting marks to the image and it also hinders the light and makes the coin look less brilliant than it really is. Keep up the excellent work!

I think I have a couple of 60W reveals around here. will look tomorrow. These bulbs sure seem to get much hotter than a normal bulb. I'll try your suggestion tomorrow! thanks!!

And after you take your photos you just leave the mess their for your wife to clean image.

They are normal bulbs. They just have a coating on the outside that filters out the yellow in the light.

Man, that is a cheap set up - not even a camera!image

Love that CW token...it "cracks" me up.

Do you use a tripod for the camera, or do you just hold it?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
    I hold it for now

wouldn't mind having a nice tripod but wouldn't know what to buy. I have a tripod for my camcorder.....would that work?

I use a travel tripod for my camera. It holds it up about 6 inches. Nice setup you got there! You give me a few ideas...

Take a look at Russ's copy stand (old thread). It's alot more convenient than a tripod, if you can find one.

Goose I see the Reveal Bulbs also throw off a bluish/purple tint with your Mavica also. This is what happened when I tried them also. If you find a solution for this please Reveal it to other Mavica owners.

    Thanks.

  • Goose -- I see in the first picture of your coin setup that you have reached a point where you now leave your checkbook with your coins. image

Probably a common habit of the forum members. image

That's a wild spiderweb Indian head token!! Copper proofs are really tough but your image is much better than mine John. I butchered a couple of Stewart's Lincoln proofs using my MS lighting setup.

  • Goose3, I always knew you were cool, but those pictures are wonderful! Very very nice.

I like the wheatie picture. It's almost like you can reach out and grab it.
