Grading coins............Do you know?

Graded Mint-State coins for me is important verses raw coinage,I mean this,If you can answer the 4 big questions of grading then it doesnt matter,I buy coins that are slabbed because i dont have the knowledge to grade, particularly from a scan on ebay or other sources i might aquire them from..it goes into far more depth than my explaination here so i will close with this.........Can you honestly say you know how to grade,And some i am sure do that visit here.
ASK yourself the questions below.

Do you know the four factors of eye appeal? How is market grading different from technical grading, and why? Do you know the differences between grading portrait and non-portrait coins? Can you detect the telltale signs of whizzing, cleaning, thumbing and artificial frosting?

I'd add one more question. What is their reference point for assigning a grade to a coin? Are people anticipating what PCGS will put on it based on what they've seen before, or is there another standard?
  • Valid point and question Clw.

    TRADERBOBZ-
My answer to your ? is a nice loud YES!
As a Morgan collector I can flip Morgans fast as the PCGS graders.
For weird stuff I might scratch my head and look @ the coin for a while and maybe reference the ANA grading book, especially for the circulated grades.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • Yes Dog......I too understand morgans,As thats what i have focused on over the past 10 or so years,But my ability to look at copper,And gold coinage and do the same is..........well very different.
I know you and morgans and you have even answered questions for me over the past few years that puzzeled me.
