Greatest price increase?

What's the greatest percentage increase you've seen on a coin in your collection? I'm not talking about coins that you've managed to have crossovered or had the grade bumped up. I'm talking about coins you bought at a fair price that were properly graded and that you've held on to for a while.

For me, it would be a VF 1909-S dime that I bought for $23 in 1983. Now worth $104, or a 352% increase over 20 years.

    Do errors count?

    25¢ bicentennial taken from a mint bag sold to a dealer for $150 = 600 x costimageimageimage

Edited to do the arithmetic: 600x = 60,000%imageimage

I wish I could say that I have a coin that shot up in value exponentially, I have had some that I purchased raw and had graded at a higher grade than I bought it at, but never by too much. I haven't been collecting long enough to have any major increases (only about 5 years or so). But, I have noticed that the 1999 Silver Proof Set I purchased from the mint has about tripled in value in that time.image
  • Yeah, the 1999 proof sets have really shot up. Wish I had bought a full set instead of just the quarters. Oh well.

As a percentage per year, either the new buffalo dollar or the 1999 proof sets. Both went up over 300%.

For me it's probably a $5 National Bank note I bought in the mid-80s from Art Kagin. I only bought it because it was issued by my hometown bank, I had never seen one before, and it only cost $20. Now it turns out there are only 8 known and it probably would sell for around $300.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
