I'm bored to death with my Lincolns.

Prices got too insane for my tastes. Quality material is getting tough to find.

What do you do in this situation? Try to be patient and wait it out? I've thought about throwing in the towel (of course keeping a few of the keys like the 09S-VDB) and selling off the rest. Is that the chicken way out? Anybody else feel the same way about one of their series?

Actually, when it gets depressing, (or I find myself out of cash) I switch to double dies, or OMM's or RPM's or even cuds! It gives me a chance to take a break, feel like I'm collecting other stuff, and read other interesting books on my favorite topic - Lincolns. Try it, you will find out how little you know about the series and the associated players. I'm at the point now where I have even discovered that there are several civil war tokens that have Mr. Lincoln on them. They are relatively cheap and hard to get. Believe me, your a long way from getting bored. You want boring - go collect ......................image

me too (to both of you)
  • I'm in the same boat. I need three to complete the series, let alone upgrade. I just sold my proof set and I'll probably funnel that into Indian heads/ FEs and large cents.

This is the main reason why I think it is best to collect different series if possible. maybe a few mercs or walkers or that type set.......

Hopefully the series will come back to earth, PCGS will grade some 67s and the planets will align, but until that happens I can wait it out. I have also found that the quaity is drying up.

I think Braddick has a good idea. While bottom drawer grades aren't always a dime-a-dozen, they're a lot cheaper then MS, for example. Plus there's a lot to be said about a well worn coin that has been around the proverbial block, with books and books of stories to tell.

Consider buying type coins that you like and might be able to use in a set(s) in the future, without getting frustrated and giving up completely. Additionally, buy a couple of grades below what you normally would to allow your dollars to buy more coins. You can always upgrade later.

    Just a thought. image

Or you could change gears to lets say certified dry chilis... You could look for the chilis with the greatest scovel units...

Just kidding, I thought about bagging the whole thing over the last few weeks. Seems we spend large sums of time argueing about grades, prices, dealers, scumbags. Then when a coin comes up you want its outrageous. Most of the stuff is high priced. You have to be financially set to even play this game.

Don't mind me, I am having a bout of SAD...Seasonal affective disorder.

This is not the season to affective. Oh Iam out of orderimage

If your bored, go over to the US coin forum and take a gander at the PCGS 69R 1919.

There is alot more to enjoying the hobby than waiting for the next purchase. Get out and enjoy it...buy a book...or a camera....meet some collectors and pick their brains dry.....teach a kid what you know. If your bored, you have only yourself to blame.

I am out for now as well. Concentrating on my Jefferson's in FS. The MS64/65 older lincoln stuff is crap and I can't pay those prices for coins I am not happy with. Jeffs are underappreciated and you can put a top 20 set together for the price of a 09-S VDB in 65RB.

  • KAJ- I think I might like to purchase that 1919 Lincoln. Would you take $1000...lol. Man....that is a nice looking coin!! Seems to be quite a few of those floating around. Try sending one into PCGS....it will probably grade MS60 (no bb)!!
