One more thing about crossovers

I was thinking...

We do grade crossovers thru the holder...

It's a little harder to see "all" of the coin thru the holder. The graders may be very slightly more conservative on crossovers in some cases. However, when we see a really great coin in for crossover, we all have a very strong desire to get it in our holder.

Desert Lizard, i keep hearing this loosening up stuff, just who has said they want p.c.g.s. to loosen up?

Most of the people who have griped have asked that they stick with the standards they started with in the mid 80's. Not looser or tighter, just the same all the time. Whats wrong with that? barberlover

I'm sending a common date IGC slabbed nicely toned Morgan now for crossover. I'll mark the package "ATTN DAvid Hall" and report back what happened.

    Please no fingerprints!! Just kidding.

  • The general collecting public reading all these threads should be informed that "crossovers" weren't originally available, or even contemplated, as a grading option at any grading service. Some years later, the crossover tier of service got dreamed up as a marketing ploy.

Unfortunately, some in the coin "industry" figured out all they had to do was first get a piece of crap in any holder, then make a real gamble (crossover service cost more back then) and send it to PCGS for potential crossover and a possible "score." After getting burned on a couple of those, I tried it myself. Coins that PCGS first called AT, got slabbed by NGC, then crossed into PCGS at the same grade. That's when I stopped buying slabs.

I always figured they couldn't see the coin as well (neither can I, even using a scope) and that they relied upon their first impression. I switched to buying coins raw, or buying slabs only when I had inspected the coins when they were raw, prior to being submitted. Subsequently, crossover service has become cheap, and even more dangerous. Buyer beware!

sounds like mr. hall has finally made a public admission of something i've complained about a lot: you cannot view the coin through the plastic w/out distortion. can't tell you how many times i've cracked a so-so coin from a slab & found that it looked so much nicer unencumbered.

    try it!

Sounds reasonable to me. I do firmly believe that PCGS does want to crossover as many deserving coins as possible.
