Why does PCGS have such a long process time for grading coins?

It seems like if you had more graders to grade coins then you could turn more of a profit from grading coins. I can't believe that grading takes 45 business days to complete. I understand the part about not having enough graders right now but there HAS to be graders somewhere that can be hired. Tying up dealers inventory for 45 days seems like bad business. Have you seen submissions drop and NGC's rise because of this?

The 45 business day (Ugh I hate the way we call it business days!) turn around is for the economy service. The regular service is a 15 day guaranteed turn around. The reason economy turn around has gotten longer over the past year is because submissions have soared...they are now about double what they were 3 years ago, and we do economy after we do regular, express and walk-thru.

I don't like the 2 month turn around for economy any more than you do. I think it should never be more than 30 real days...at the most. However, it's not so easy to hire graders. And I'm sure you wouldn't want anything less than the best to grade your coins.

I'm working on the problem, but it might take as much as 3 to 6 months to fix.

    Thanks for your patience.
