LB Grading?

David,

Thanks for another Tuesday chat!

Do you feel the consistancy in grading at the shows is equal to the coins in which are graded at the office? It sounds like there was some major disappointment with grading by some dealers at the show. As time goes by is it harder to get coins to upgrade because many if not most of the coins graded years ago have already been regraded? And, lastly, do graders breakout the grading set from time to time to check themselves?

Tony...I think that grading is fairly consistent at both shows and in the office. We do have the flucuations that are part of the process of humans applying somewhat subjective judgements to their final grades. Dealers complain at every show, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. I've had knowledgeable dealers tell me at shows that our grading was horrible, and then other knowledgeable dealers at the same show tell me that grading was right on. It's all very subjective and the dealers are always personally involved in their coins. However, I'm sure some shows...and some days in the grading room...may be better than others.

Contrary to what some believe, we really don't think about it like that. We just try to grade the coins the best we can...every day...in the office, or at a show.
