every heard of a Washington Quarter that is a counterfiet?

I have noticed numerous posts about counterfiet coins over the past year. (ie: 1916-D Merc, 1909-S VDB, etc.) But I haven't seen any posts about a Washington Quarter counterfiet. Is this because there are not any "spendy" Washington quarters? Yes, the 32-D and the 32-S are the keys, but you can get those in circualted condition for well under $100 still. So, it seems like it is not worth it for someone to add a mint mark on a quarter. Have any of you every heard or seen an added mint mark to a 32 Washington?

The reason for asking, is I plan on getting the 32-D and 32-S Washington soon. However, I only want to get those in lower-grade circulated condition. So I plan on buying them raw. With this in mind, what are my chances of getting a counterfiet Washington?

There are dozens of different types of counterfeit Washingtons which have been
made over the years. And there are probably a lot more that the Secret Service
got all examples of so are not known.

To answer your implied question; there are very few counterfeit or altered Wash-
ington quarters which have been made to decieve collectors. The bulk of these are
the '32 D&S issues which frequently have an added mint mark. This is especially
common on the Denver coin and most were made in the 50's and 60's.

There are actually at least two very deceptive die-struck counterfeit Washingtons that exist. Both are purportedly Philadelphia coins and they are 1932 and 1934. They are very good work. For the coins you are talking about there are also quite a few added mintmark coins out there. In general, for 1932 coins, if the mintmark looks bad then the coin is good and if the mintmark looks good then the coin is bad.

I saw a story in one of the national magazines over the past couple of years about a bunch of modern fakes circulating around. Evidently quite crude, they even spelled "quarter dollar" wrong. I know I saw it but wouldn't be able to recite where...probably Coin World.

  • You are quite correct coppercoins, it was in an issue of Coinworld about 2 years ago or so they had made a 1998 quarter dollar and if memory serves me right they left out the O or A in dollar.
