Is this a "red flag" for buying?

I've finally ironed out a deal for the lot I spoke of some time ago... 2 concerns for me though. He lives in Canada (international purchase) and he does have a perfect ebay rating (+144), but there has been no activity on the account for over 6 months... He does have a real email addy, none of that hotmail or yahoo crap. Normally I wouldn't be as concerned, but it's over $1,000 so I want to be sure. Is there a fairly good way to protect buyers from international fraud? Or actually how hard would it be to file fraud charges if something happens? I don't really have any reason to not trust him other than his accounts inactivity... Any help is appreciated.

    We've heard many ebayers suggest using one of the "middleman"
    people for international orders of that high amount.Ebay has them available for a fee or at least they used to.Hope this helps.

    filing for mail fraud yourself wouldn't do anything. The post master usually just hands it over to police and usually they dont wanna do anything. Ebay does have a mail fraud department, so if you get screwed, you can go through them and they will investigate and nail the guy for sure. Hope you dont get ripped off. the middleman thing sounds really cool, great idea for those hugh purchases.

    I don't think mail fraud charges would work where the guy is in Canada...Don't think we can enforce our laws in another country...that's why we have extradition...check with the Canadian Embassy in NY and see what their laws on mail fraud are and how difficult it is to file charges there...just in case

    Well, we've pretty much worked things out. He seems to be a great guy and gave me all of the info I could ever ask for. There's not really any reason not to trust him, just always unsure when making a bigger purchase. Going to give it a shot. If I miss, the wife will have my 'nads but... you win some, you lose somemore... image

    Sometimes you have to go with gut instinct, By the way, Canada is not that far away for $1000.

    LOL Ted... Actually, it's right acrossed the border from me (live in Michigan), but 8 hours away. Just as far as me driving to Tennessee. We've decided to break up the lot shipping wise. I have to pay a little more in shipping to do so, but puts me at less of a risk for getting totally burned

    well dont know if anyone else got the email about getting to the orange star on ebay and that said you got a free gift.... just had to log in and it was a fake logon page and it was a way of getting into someones ebay account, maybe they may have got the email too and fell for it and now maybe a ripper has that guys ebay account, made me wonder when you said it had no activity on the account for over 6 months.... just something to look into

    Hey Mike - never heard about that...yikes. Actually, his account, email and Paypal (which I'm paying with) all match. So I'm guessing it's all cool as far as that's concerned but thanks for the heads up on that
