Nice Battle going on with the 1965's

There is a nice battle going on with the 1965's. Mastro still has a huge lead...but there are 5 other sets battling towards 100% completion. Plus I know of one set that is not even listed that would be in this list as well! Most of these sets need the same cards in PSA 8 or better..so it should be fun to watch.

1 MastroNet 8.65 100% 8.65
2 The Duke of Mint 8.38 99.83% 8.37
3 Bobs 65 Topps Set 8.20 99% 8.12
4 PAS65 8.00 97.83% 7.85
5 J. Wilson-Collection--1965 8.08 94.98% 7.81
6 Qualitycards 8.01 92.31% 7.42

  • I believe that Bobs bought my old 65 set from Mastronet. I noticed he added and upgraded and large number of cards recently which were all from my old set. It will be interesting to see if some of the extreme low pop cards (4 or less) will be bringing 10x book, 20 x book, or more or will people settle for 7's.

Jay I'll be in Chicago in 2 weeks and I'll see what I can find for you.

Yes, man of us are picking up '65's in bunches lately. Matter of fact, I've picked up almost 50 off of BOBS so Waynes theory looks correct, I initially thought he was bailing out, but obviously he had many duplicates at his disposal. Mike King chose a different path and stopped collecting '65's and was nice enough to contact me prior to his eBay auctions and I picked up a handful there. I've also done some wheeling and dealing w/ PAS and would venture to say that we have exchanged over 50 cards to each other including 42 that I sent him 2 weeks ago that propelled him on the registry to pass me. So its been a friendly rivalry w/ many '65 collectors, but BASILONE may be correct that #3 thru #7 Davalillo needs many mutual cards so some blood-letting may begin when they appear in auction format...jay

Looks like the Duke only needs one more card to reach 100%...of course hes holding out for an 8 and not going the easy route of nabbing a 7 for his final card. I guess hes just upgrading till that one card becomes available.

Skip....if you read these boards....its time to come clean and register that monster set of yours!!!

  • this is my favorite topps baseball design ever. i wish i had enough money to pursue this set

GR - It only takes 1 card to get the set started, and there are many common PSA-8's that eBay's for $9.99-$15.00, and PSA-7's go for even less, so its do-able over the long haul. If you decide on collecting this set Email me your address (to my link below) and I'll send you a PSA-8 to get the ball rolling...jay

WAYNE - There are about 20 different cards with single digit PSA-8 pops, and only 1 card the lovable Charlie Smith (pop 3) that is in the "4 or less" category. Out of the top 6 sets listed only the Mastro set has the PSA-8 Smith, Davalillo has one in his set (ranked #7) and perhaps a Mets fan like Pantsmanfish has the other...jay
  • well i only collect psa 8 and 9 cards, so doing a 600+ card set in that condition would be way too expensive. thats why i collect hockey, because the sets are so small that theyre attainable without mortgaging the house. i am thinking about putting together a team set or a run of random hall of famers from a set soon just cause they would look nice displayed, and i will probably do it from the 65 set

    Good Riddence-

I really enjoy Hockey as well..but do not have any vintage yet. If you get any extras in PSA 8 or higher..I would be intersted in trading for 1965 PSA8 cards I have from your favorite team.

Just something to think about down the road,

    John
  • im working on a type set (1 regular issue card from every set, every year up to 1989). right now the only thing i have is a 67 stan mikita allstar psa 9 and a few random league leader cards in psa 9. since this is an ongoing project and im always upgrading, i will eventually have a bunch of extras in psa 8/9. ill let you know. thats pretty much all im collecting now vintage hockey. i was killing myself trying to go after random cards in random sports.....at least now i have some sort of a focus
  • Jay,

Actually skipm owns the other Charlie Smith card. I don't know what it would take for Davalillo to sell his but I offered him what I thought was a very large amount for it and he declined. So it looks like all 3 of those are pretty much stashed away for a long time.

    John,

I don't believe Skip reads these boards but I do know that he is aware of the registry. He said that he plans to register the set one of these days but he's not in any hurry. I would bet he is over 80% complete with of gpa close to 8.9 or so. He has very few 8's and those are only on the cards where 9's pretty much don't exist. It's going to be really tough completing the set without dipping down into more 8's.

    Goodriddance,

I don't know anything at all about hockey but good luck with you sets.

Skip has been active on ebay recently. I spoke with him yesterday, but didn't ask about when he would register the set... It is a beast, absolute beast.

1965 Registry Set builders: What a timely post! I was fortunate enough to have a raw card supplier of mine in the Pacific Northwest come across a beautiful set last October. I plucked the best 275 commons I was offered and have had a few graded. I just dropped off another 100 with PSA at Ft. Washington. The ones I've had recently graded can be seen on invoice # 8028966, and all of them are on a set listed in my name very shortly. I have wavered back and forth about building this set to completion, but I think my interest in 1967 (and 1968) is too powerful. By the time I return from my 10 day spring training in Florida, I'll start posting on ebay.

The 100 I dropped off was on 30 day vintage common schedule, so I'd say those will open up late April. I still have about 50-70 waiting to submit. We'll see just how competitive you '65 guys are...

Ill take your PSA 4....just kidding....you have several cards that should fetch huge dollars.

I laughed at that. 1967 Duke Sims is both "tough" and "low pop." I continue to be hampered by the inability of the folks to note "QUALIFIERS OK" when written next to individual cards, in the middle of an invoice of "NQ's." I was hoping for an 8OC or 9OC, but hey, that's life. He was taken out of a cello pack in November, and the cards started to get more centered as the pack wore on--the pack yielded 2 PSA 9's and 7 PSA 8's, but his card would've been worth gold in straight 9 as 1/1.

I am willing to include the incredible Jerry Lumpe 4 with any purchase over $100.image

    Uh Oh....

I may have set a fire under Davalillo's a$$ since I did not include him in the 1965 leaderboard (see my original post). Thank God Im just starting this set (for a 2nd time image)...and do not have face the wrath of Jim's competitive nature.

I apologize in advance to all other 1965 collectors......image

    Davalillo-

In your last post are you talking about the Charlie Smith POP 3 that you own (all 3 are firmly in sets) ?

    Sorry for the empty post.

Yes the pop 3 is what I was referring to. Too cheap?

<<Yes the pop 3 is what I was referring to. Too cheap? >>

Davalillo: Quite the entrepreneur you are!! I don't think I've ever heard the phrase "too cheap" in reference to your selling prices. Nonetheless -- you are a great person to deal with, on both sides of the deal.

    Cheers-

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

DAVALILLO - I'm flattered that I get a $1500 break on the rest of the world. But the irony is if I ever plan to sell my set, like Wayne and others choose to do, the Charlie Smith will be listed as an $18.00 common. So if I sell the set at 100% smr, I only bring back $18.00, 110% will get me $19.20 and so on. For this reason, a nice NM PSA-7 for $10 or $20 may do the trick in crossing out the evil #22 Charlie Smith. The only thing Smith was known for is the Yankees rec'd him from the Cardinals for Roger Maris. And regardless of how scarce Smith is at this point, I would grab the Maris w/ an smr of $135 over Smith any day...jay

Just want you to know that because of your tireless help on my sets and because of your expected future help that you get preferential treatment!

Also Jay, I think you will find that there are no buyers for an entire set(especially one which has the low pops in 7) at a premium to smr so that you will find that the best way to maximize value is to sell it off piecemeal. When that time comes, I hope you turn to me first.
  • qualitycardsqualitycards Posts: 2,811 ✭✭✭
DAVALILLO - I agree to get the biggest return, one should sell the cards individually like Zeder did.

When that time comes, I hope you turn to me first.
Only problem is, you and me are neck and neck and you could finish well before me...jay

  • I've got Charlie Smith in PSA 8. I picked it up, raw, from Paul Stark in SF at the Tri-Star Labor Day Show. Think I paid a buck.

Oh, did I mention it has the o/c qualifier?image

As Jay said, "That'll have to do."

TG - Its still a NM 8. So click off #22 and concentrate on others you needimage...jay

As promised guys--I put up the first group of 65's less than 6 hours after I picked up the box from the Post Office--GradeandTrade, beat that!image

I tried to put as many of the tough cards on first. Others not posted yet will get done next Tuesday night. Good luck to all you registry monsters!

    E

P.S. As soon as I get the next batch of 100 back, they'll go up too. Sorry, didn't submit #22 yet.image
