Here's a good example of market grading. Should it be slabbed?

See that scratch on the buffalo? (How could you miss it?) That is on the coin, and not the holder.

The coin is a 1920-S (one of the tougher dates in the series).

You can bet that if it was a 1920-P, it would be bagged.

  • Looks VF to me, not sure if it was worth slabbing.

Believe it or not, it's an MS63. The S-mint issues are known for horrible strikes...and this one doesn't seem to be an exception.

MastaHanky- I think it is just a case of net grading it must be a pretty nice coin otherwise. I have had a few coins with scratches like that get slabbed in the past. MS 64 seems to be the top grade for a coin with a scratch like yours although I have seen 65's with a small scratch.

One thing good about Buffs is that the strike weakness areas are NOT in the same place where the first signs of rub occur. So from the picture the coin is at least AU. Strike problem or not there is wear on the Buffalo's hip....at least it looks that way from the picture.

are you saying there's no wear on the buff's back leg, arse, and tail? that sure looks like wear.

I agree with the "cuda" about the wear.
  • Of course it should be slabbed if it meets the particular grading services criteria for slabbing. If not it should not be. image

BTW, I should add that it doesn't seem to me it couldn't be slabbed. Unless it was whizzed or tooled...which is even more difficult to tell from the pic.

EDIT: In my post above I should have said "at most AU" not "at least AU". I guess I'm thinking backwards this morning. image
