Hmmmmmm.... Should the Kitty buy this one? The scan is way small on a coin of this magnitude...... I would sure love to see those bell lines up close and personal Daddy-o!... Here is the ultimate catch, the Holy Grail for Frankie collectors, the coin that assures the Registry set person a top ten standing......... And somehow I find myself let down alittle..........

You're right - that is the holy grail of Frankies - at $14K+ really makes you wonder if the MS64FBL version isn't a better deal at $4k or so. For us poor folks though, the MS66 will suffice image

At $14.5K, it should be a real special coin, but Lucille, you know it probably looks like most "S" mint coins. I know for me, at that price, it should have unquestionably bold bell lines. How many times do you see that on an "S" mint Franklins?

You're right Gilbert - this is one of the very few that I've ever seen with bold lines.

Its an excellent coin Lucy, and very well worth the money.

I wouldnt buy it, but that's me. I'm in the "It would have to have VERY bold bell lines" I have a nice plain 66
that I'm very happy with. Truth of the matter is, I see a lot of PCGS FBL coins that an advanced collector would pass on. Getting the FBL from PCGS is one thing. Being able to sell as a FBL is quite a differant story.
Another thought is, if I was selling a coin with a strike designation at 14k, I'd make quite an effort to show it. The fact that it's sort of casually mentioned raises my caution level. Is the seller confident of the grade?

imageThe picture or scan makes it difficult to see the FBL's through the center of bell. Is that a light refraction from the slab. I'd email him and see if he couldn't send you a better pic or scan and really supersize the lower bell lines.

If I collected Franks then I'd look for non-FBL pieces where the "non-FBLness" didn't effect the eye-appeal. After all, what is point of having a full strike if it isn't for the overall eye-appeal? To me, stuff like FB and FBL are hype so I'd save money finding pieces that have good enough strike to where the eye-appeal isn't downgraded.

I`m not a frankie man myself, meaning I`m not very familiar. The good I see is that the reverse looks really good with some mild frost that I can see on the bell mount. The part that would bug me, in which is probably not a really big deal, is a couple of ticks behind the head and surface scrape in front of his chin. All-in-all it does look like a nice Franklin.
