sadysta1sadysta1 Posts: 1,311 ✭✭✭
I cherry picked around 20 Lincolns and I shipped them to PCGS for grading. I tried to pick ones without any obvious scratches or hits, the best examples I could find. The resilts are back and they are all over the plce, I guess I have to get a little better.

HOWEVER, IT WAS WORTH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Made really good on coins 1 and 2 and line 3 (6th coin) makes up for the whole order

Whoah! An MS68RD. From what I've been hearing around here lately, that is one HELL of a grade. Congratulations!image

I know PCGS does not designate, but if that is a copper 1982 that's an even bigger score for its type value.

Good job. Actually, great job, especially the MS68. That brings the pop on the 1982 in MS68 to 9. I wonder if its Small Date or Large Date?

I think copper is harder to get in high grade than zinc, but one dealer has told me he has made 1982D MS68's in copper in the past, so it's certainly possible this one is copper.

That is interesting - did you get these out of uncirculated sets? When you get them back, maybe studying them will help you decide which ones are 66's 67's and what caused th 64's. I would guess that the 64's aren't worth slabbing fee so if you could lower those and increase the 67's, 68's it would justify doing!

All coins came out of rolls, I tried to pick the best couple of examples out of each roll and by the process of elimination I arrived at these coins. I do not know hhat happened to 69-S (it's a tough year anyway). One imortent critera was no visible hits from other coins on the surface.

?? visible hits (contact marks) are important but what about the other 3 main components of grading ??

Strike, luster, eye appeal - did you consider those with your submissions?

I am not as good a grader as the professionals, but I am always trying to learn (partly so I don't get screwed as bad, and partly because I would like to eventually make some money from my hobby)

Strike I took somewhat under consideration, but I think that was the culprit that got these 69-S low grade, strike was soft and not as detailed (master die was worn)
Luster I did not really took into account with a limited pool of coins I had (what may have gotten 85-D in trouble was surface bubbles
Eye appeal is where I put all my hard work:

    1. as said before - no visible contact marks (first without loupe, later with loupe)
    2. No carbon spots !!!!!
    3. A nice swipe of acetote, let it dry flip the coin repeat the process for the other side.

I actually learned to do it with all modern MS coins on regular basis - gently swipe the surface with acetone cotton swab, I have never had PVC problem (aka PVC contamination bodybag)
With the limited number coins I started with (no contact marks start) I wasn't able to be picky, so I sent them all in.
  • Congrats on your submission, and thanks for the post. I too have a number of Lincolns submitted to PCGS, and if they grade mine in the same amount of time as yours I expect to see some results in the next few days. I will post the results.

    Thanks,
    John

    sadysta1,

    Way to go!image

Just to ask: I assume you owned the full rolls where you cherry picked these coins out of? If so, is there anything you look for in buying rolls (i.e. Evidence the rolls are original). What other tips would you give?

JJAcks. Yes I bought some rolls and cherry picked best examples. Some of the coins got carbon spots in the during grading hence the lower grades

    Great Job!!!

I like the turnaround time even better.

I think they are much quicker on the modern coins Pos1964, than economy pre-1965.

Could it be they have different (Novice) graders? And might that be an explanation of why grades were all over the board? I've found that as well. When I get to know a series, I think I'm a better grader than a guy sitting there grading one lincoln, then an Ike, then a GE, etc. How can they possibly know all the true characteristics of the series, much less the date they are grading!!!!

Anyway, I'm happy for you and your results. I hope I have the same luck with my batch of Ikes.
