Gem Frankies going up in price!!! (BEWARE: Coin related thread!!!)

Every so often I gather information from Ebay on the price of Franklins vs. the CU price to determine what the actual price of Franklins is doing at the MS64 and MS65 levels.

Last September I chose a batch of 24 MS64 and MS64FBL coins that went on sale at the same time, along with a batch of 19 MS65 and MS65FBL's. In the sale that ended last night, there was a batch of 8 MS64 and MS64FBL coins, and 27 MS65 and MS65FBL coins. Now granted, the mix of coins, dates, and mints is always going to be a factor, but here is what I've come up with so far.

In the September 2002 sale:

MS64/64FBL Frankies averaged 53.7% of the CU price.
MS65/65FBL Frankies averaged 37.33% of the CU price.

In the March 2003 sale:

MS64/64FBL Frankies averaged 44.76% of CU price.
MS65/65FBL Frankies averaged 51.99% of CU price.

In my book, because there were really not enough 64/64FBL examples to make case, I'd say that the prices remained pretty constant. However, in the MS65/65FBL, there were enough coins to make a decent sampling, and the price jump seemed pretty significant.

Some MS65 coins were close, and in one case, surpassed CU prices. I found this interesting because I've been saying all along that MS65 Franklins are pretty undervalued, and I guess people are starting to figure that out.

    Well that's good to hear. But, I have some mostly plain 65's on the board with very little response.
    I'd like to see the series go up high enough were I'd be happy with my realized prices.
    I've been tempted to sell my best untoned pieces just because I want a sunroom on the back of the house.
    I'm too emotionally attached to most of my toned pieces, so the prices would have to really go up for me to sell without reservation. Funny how your priorities change when you have a family.
    Anyway, I have always felt that some day, Frankies were going to explode in price. I just hope it happens in my lifetime.
    Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

    Frank, you are right. Gem Frankies are going up in price. I just noticed that silver spot is up $0.04 to $4.63.

    It figures....as soon as I start putting together a set of 65FBL, the price goes up. It's a conspiracy I tell'ya!!! That's it...from now on, no body knows what set I'm working on!image

    I've noticed that there are a lot of registry sets in this series. New ones are coming on, and quite a few updates. The proofs seem slow now, and prices really aren't on the move there as far as I can see.

    It looks like the PCGS pops continue to rise as well in both the mint state and the proof runs. I've been told by a series expert that standards are loosening a little.

    Seems like supply and demand are both growing. If we get through all the new production, some of these pieces could be nice buys.

    Hey Frank - Interesting COIN post! Couple thoughts, do you know if CU prices adjusted during that time frame? If they adjusted downward, that would push your percentages up, and thus would not have necessarily show any price trend. Second, have you tried this for 66 pieces, would be curious what could be said about them?

    The CU hasn't been updated in the past 6 months, as such, the percentages are of the actual prices posted. As for 66's, well - there we're getting into such a range of prices and quality levels that I really don't think that my study would do the grade justice. Take a look at This sale, this one, and this one and you'll begin to see that 66's just seem to be all over the place depending on quality, who's selling, and who's buying.

    Look for the deep strong mirrors and a coin that appears to be black and white.......... Check the coin at all angles and look for hairlines, Frankies are noted for having many of them.....
