I applaud PCGS for the good it has done

It is so very easy to find the faults of any large company. They can be irritating and

annoying to many people. However, we must never lose sight

of the good that PCGS has done for the industry, both for the dealers and the collectors.

The constant bashing of this company leaves a very bad taste in the mouths of newbies

who may not remember the treacherous world of collecting that existed before PCGS.

It was every collector for themselves ,agains a wall of misrepresentation, overgrading, overpricing,

doctored and less then ideal coins. With PCGS a new standard of quality came into being. I do

not minimize the changes and evolution that PCGS must undertake, but my worst fear is for

a coin world without PCGS. Everytime the company reaches out to the collector and does something

nice and generous for us ,there are always those who say "yes but". I think we should begin to

say more of THANK YOU PCGS rather then bad dog. I favor very strongly PCGSs attempt to slow

or stop the grade inflation that has been creeping in , due to the crack out artists and the malevolent

coin doctors who are in fact defrauding and stealing money from collectors, for coins that Mother

Nature never intended to look as they do. We as collectors seem to have a love/hate relationship

with PCGS even as they provide these Forums ,which so many use to criticise and bash them.

I remember what it was like some 30 years ago for collectors, and I for one say thank heaven

for PCGS, for providing a level of confidence in the quality of the coins we purchase and enjoy.

I spent over 600 dollars on same day grading and received two cross overs. It was not a particularly

profitable endeaver for me at the LB show, and yet it was my small way of saying thank you for

a difficult job that is being done well. Not perfect mind you ,but well enough to instill confidence

against the roller coaster rides that affected the value of coins and the number of collectors in the

not so pleasent past. Sometimes a majority starts with but a single voice. The little bear

I understand your point Bear, but it has been going back to the above quote little by little. Actually imo we are back to those days now. Many made a killing through the years of crackouts and upgrades. It's run it's course and now everyone is upset they can't make the easy money anymore. Well I say join the rest of the world.image

  • Glad to see you post this bear. I too am still a PCGS fan despite a lot of negative criticism I have read on this board as of late. True, they may not be a perfect corporation but as a collector I still value their judgment over my own abilities to grade a coin. I still value their judgment over that of the other grading companies. I don't see where being conserative does harm to the collecting community. Quite the opposite, as a collector it gives me more confidence in my investment(s). As long as human beings are involved in any process there will be some flaws, but I don't want a computer deciding what grade the coin should be.

PCGS has done much good in the past. But during their time, KMart, Montgomery Wards and Woolworths were innovative and respected as well. It's what the future holds that concerns me:

The parent company's losses seem to be accelerating - pretax operating loss was $1.5M last quarter. One of the most respected numismatists of our time is unceremoniously dumped. A CEO is hired from a company that has bled red ink. Dealers - not crackout artists, but retail dealers - are up in arms over the recent turn in grading. Quality coins that PCGS once had a monopoly on are now in NGC * holders. The attitude that it's ok to frustrate your customers because "they keep submitting". Manipulation of modern populations [ie: an apparent policy of no 70's for a long time and then a quota on 70's]. The attitude that NGC coins are there for the "raping" and then that "all NGC coins are overgraded". The ever increasing premium for PCGS holders because of the tight supply - which leads to gross premiums being paid for coins that simply don't warrant the grade under anybody's standards, let alone coins graded a few years ago that if cracked and resubmitted now would be two or three grades lower.

PCGS has received much respect in the past. But being known as the ubertight grading company will NOT be enough to maintain that position in the future.
  • Very well said Mr. Bear.........And if you don't want Frank's cigar, send it to me. Good cigar and good beer. Almost as good as a good coin!!!!!!!!!!...........Ken

yes, years ago, it was ever man for himself, but there were standards for grading back then...remember jim ruddy from bowers and ruddy? he wrote a wonderful book on how to learn and grade your coins. many didnt bother to study or read it.......many came into the hobby with the get rich thinking, and many of those people got taken to the cleaners. so whos to blame? where they in it for a hobby ,and enjoyment, or just to make a fast buck........remember the wall street funds? how many people who invested in them really cared about what they were investing in? most i dare say didnt know an vg from a bu.........has pcgs helped.......yes.......i remember well when they first started, it would help protect the ones who didnt bother to learn how to grade thier coins........what i dont like is, now we are tight in our grading standards......whats that suppose to mean? so i send in a coin 3 months ago, and its a ms65..so if the same coin is resumitted today its a ms64? because now they are tight? doesnt work for me, and from all we are hereing a lot of others either.........david hall, if you are reading this........would love to here from you........

Quite true Bear, and would add that most of their problems arise directly from
what we have charged them to do; assign a net market grade to coins which
    vary on many continua.
