what do you think of the ngc*star designation? your experiences with it?

waht is your expereince with the new * star designated coins from ngc? have you seen any? do you like it?

for me i like it

it might be the most subjective item in the ngc service opinion

but i must admit most all

over95% of the star coins

are really exceptional/monster in their eye appeal from my own experiences and what other collectors and dealers have told me that i have confidence in!

    i like it a lot

bought my first Star coin a week ago

it is a MS67* Merc that is blast white with explosive luster and less marks than I have ever seen on a 67

this is a much better solution than bumping the grade a point for eye appeal

it also tells me that the coin (as viewed by NGC) is something special

neat! the star is for eye appeal and from what i have seen overall they are super duper excpetional in terms of eye appeal

please go the the ngc forums coin forum and see the two posts on the ngc star designation with photos and please add your comments and also post some scans as requested by the threads

hope to see you there and i think if you are looking or are curious about the star designation this might make it more clear for anyone!

    michael - LOL

i posted a thread on it a couple weeks ago

it is a common date 1939 - there are plenty of 67's out there that only sell for $40, but worth about $300 in 68

    but not a common coin!

the seller wanted $99 but I talked him down to $65 as I was buying sight unseen (but he had a return policy). He had sent in 5 original rolls to NGC for grading and this coin was the only Star.

I am very happy with it and will post a picture this weekend

by the way, I have no idea how to tell a 67 from a 68. Surfaces are great with only 1 small brush mark in the luster on the obv not viewable with the naked eye but can be seen under 10x. The size of the brush mark is less than 1/2 millimeter. Stirike is very good but the middle band is not quite full. This would be an amazing coin in MS67FB*!

I especially look for star* coins. They have with few exceptions,

been coins of unusual eye appeal and beauty. It was a great idea, and most helpful

in seeking the coins I like to own. I only wish that PCGS would in some way also denote either PQ coin or

    high eye appeal designations.

Spotlighting exceptional eye-appeal with a "*" star, or something similar, certainly is superior to giving out a gratis grade point!

I like it, it is a good PQ indicator.

I have quite a few NGC pieces that I'm quite sure would qualify for the star designation, but it really doesn't interest me in sending them in to get it. I guess I just figure that if I ever decide to sell them, the person will be able to see how nice they are with or without a star on the holder.

Unless that person is like WallStreetMan, who can't see past the plastic covering the coin! image

You really need to let go of your anger towards all Co's that compete with PCGS.

People will start to dismiss your opinions altogether.

Based on limited exposure I'd go along with the "I like it" crowd. I haven't seen a disapointment yet.

It appears NGC is doing the right thing by really sticking to their guns on what gets the STAR and what doesn't.

Seems strange, but I saw a MS68* 1972-S Ike and liked it better than the MS69 right next to it!

When I see it on a monster toned coin, seems to be IN ADDITION to the point or two bump for eye appeal, not in lieu of. For some reason, the same doesn't seem to apply for blazing white coins. Not being a tone fan myself, I really haven't had any reason to submit there. PCGS grades white coins about the same IMHO.

I purchased one about 6 months ago. A 66sms quarter from R&I. Its white no toning and I just love it. It really does have super eye appeal. I never would have owned that coin had it not a the * designation. Maybe that is the key, having a professional group of graders stepping up and telling you this coin has super eye appeal. Also gives me more comfort buying coins off the net. Sometimes before you call something a gimmick you should try if first or would that be a novel idea? image

I like it b/c they dont give it out to every coin they come across. This is the only 1959-d Quarter to get a * designation in any grade, (i believe)

I'll second what has been said above. I've seen about 100 star coins and liked about 95 of them. That said, I would have liked the same coins "without" the little star on the holder...... Buy the coin not the holder.imageimage

wow all great responses also here is that star halfdime agfox!!

the first AND ONLY STAR FOR AN MS HALFDIME LEGEND OBVERSE

AND A MS 68 TO BOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    WILD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    SINCERELY michael

for me the star as stated by ngc has to have all the graders that are graingb the coin that day agree that it is exceptional including the finalizer if one disscents then it does not get the star

now i am sure it is subjective and i am sure that some do not get the star that deserve it but i look at it this way if it gets the star overall when either a novice to an advanced collector to a dealer specialist looks st the coin all will agree it is a really neast eye appealling coin!

enjoy the hobby and your star coins

here is a star coin that is a pre civil war coin the first star in this series and the only star and a ms68 to boot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    sincerely michael

oh only teasing!! but seriouly i did cut four sharp corners into this slab!!.....................lol

I've never seen a starred coin that was ugly. Most have beautiful toning however i have a standing liberty quarter in ngc ms 67 with a star that is completely white and mind blowing, the luster is so thick.

wow the white coins must be really super eye appealling with the star

i also hear that ngc will also star ultra cameo coins pre 1915 but the coins have to be super deep frsoty exceptional ultra cameo like a really ultra ultra plus plus stellar ultra cameo both sides to get it!

i asked some of the experts at ngc today about this and they told me that it could happen but it would be a rare occurance!
