100 Greatest US Coins: A book review

Picked one up last week and for $30 it was a good deal for the super photography and coffee table sized book. You can read it in bed, unlike the Breen Encyclopaedia!

Lots of interesting little stories about the usual "glamour" coins. I read through it all already but am going through it one more time, yes it is that good.

My only complaint is there was an overabundance of pattern, proof and never circulated coins. If a non or newbie collector picked up the book he/she would think all coins must cost a fortune. I would have loved to see more mundane coins profiled. They did have the 1955 DDO which was good but more coins like that or the history behind some little seen coins that actually did circulate. They should not almost all be $50,000+ coins. There are some interesting coins which are in low in mintage and survivorship but hold lots of great history but they were not included, like some of the CC gold or southern mint gold.

Bottomline, get it, display it and maybe you will get a friend hooked on the hobby!

I found it odd that they listed coins such as the 1916 Quarter and 1916-D Dime but failed to list the 1901-S Quarter, which is probably the rariest circulating non-error coin of the 20th Century....well...at least it's far rarer than either of the former and probably just as "well known".

Nice icon, desert. I love to see my coins used as icons. (Actually, that's not my coin anymore.)

I saw a copy of that book at the Houston show. It looked very, very cool.

I just called the publisher of that book. I'm going to carry it ....and start selling books on eBay. I'm going to lasso Stephanie into the coin business and she's gonna help me with book sales, among other things.

    I almost listed my 200th item on eBay/in my eBay store....then a coin sold....back down to 198.

I've yet to hit 200. Man, that is a lot of work. My arm hurts!

I saw the book at the LB showand glanced through it quickly. I agree it is a great coffee table book ( I mean that positively) and will capture the imagination of someone.
