Check out these prices on 61 Topps today

1961 PSA auctions today by pc

Well, prices still haven't peaked on 61's yet, and out own pc was the beneficiary today. I can't believe the prices on these common PSA 9 cards that sold today. All over $300, with a SMR of $85. With primeeagle around, none of the rest of us can ever get a card. I wonder if he will bid on all 300 of the Superior PSA 9's coming up.

PC, if the prices are guaranteed to come down, it looks like you are selliong at the peak of the bubble. Good job.

    Rob,
i was surpised only that you didnt go(large)for the 1/1.
then again there are plenty of 8s and we know
the inevitability there.the peak in prices was indeed
2 years ago for the stars but the set registry is still
kicking up the low pop commons.atleast no one reading
these boards can return in a year or two and claim they
weren't advised of price "volatility".where i come from volatility
means larger than normal fluctuation.on wall street that word
is a politically correct synonym for "adjustment"...image
ps..."adjustment" became fashionable after october 1987.

    Wacky,

I hope that you have some hard evidence...just because an auction ends in a high final bid, doesn't mean foul play.

The low pop cards in sets where there are many people "competing" consistently commanding high prices.

    Please tell us your evidence.

    Regards,

    Alan

  • WackyDave!!!!!!!

For the last few months I've noticed some ridiculous remarks come from your uninformed mouth...I know the seller very well and every bidder on every card sold, I think you should take your x-box and put it where it belongs...or take a few classes in 61 topps 101.

Alan is correct in saying put up or shut up! He like all of us involved with this set know, you have nothing to back up what you say....

I think you should stick with what you know best, WACKY-STUFF...

There is way way to much shill bidding on Ebay. I think it is perfectly normal to suspect shill bidding but only when the bid history warrants it.

  • Just love the conspiratorial theorists!!!!

Of all the people out there, PC happens to be one of the most upright and ethical sellers out in the market.

Actually, not just in selling, but in all aspects of his business and personal life.

Nice try, but time to move on.

1961 is a popular set. I believe two of the tougher higher number cards just went for close to $500 apiece in psa 8. I would like to believe there is a conspiracy but there are just ba lot of collectors doing set.
I have the sense that on all these 60s Topps sets(excluding 1968 which will be easier) that I will be able to get to set ratings of 7.8 without a lot of difficulty but that the final push to 8.0 may be more difficult--or at least more costly.

  • There was no shill bidding on these cards. didn't need to be. Just like John, I have dealt with the seller and all of the bidders, and all are great guys.

PC, I remember just about 6 months ago when a dealer wanted me to pay $150 for a 1/1 PSA 9, and I refused, saying I never paid more than $125, which was true, and he sold it to me. The addition of a few high bidders has driven the prices through the roof. i ahven't been able to get a PSA 9 at a price I am willing to pay for months, except on the rare occasion that these guys don't show up.

Davallilo: On the two cards you referenced, the prices would have gone much higher except Ebay had connection problems, and the snipes didn't go off. I think the 523 Gibbon would have easily topped $600, and the 559 Gentile in the mid 500's.

For those looking for low prices, stay away from the 61's.image

    Vic,

I am of the opinion, probably a minority one around here, that the entire card market is going into another bull phase. PSA grading and the set registry have done wonders for the collecting market. I am seeing lots of new players entering in the past two n=months in a big way. Often, they are previous raw card collectors who start to grade some of their cards and register. then the competetive adreniline starts to come in as they move up the rankings. Soon, they are no longer happy with a PSA 6 and 7 set, but move up to 8's, and then often 9's.

When you collected a raw set, it was a great sense of accomplishment to finish it and have all nice cards, but there wasn't really anybody to share it with, and you never knew how it stacked up against others. Now you know.

Over a year ago here, Brucemo was complaining about the registry and that all it is is guys saying mine's bigger than yours, or something to that affect. He meant it as a putdown, but in reality, I think he is somewhat right, and it inspires guys to continually improve their set. Except for all of the email you get on how to increase your size, it really is not possible to change the other. image

With a steadily dwindling supply of gradeable quality cards, and a rapidly rising number of collectors, prices are bound to go up. While I think that in the 61 set, the PSA 9's are in a bubble and cannot continue to go for 10+ times the PSA 8 cards, overall the set, like the others, will continue to appreciate handily. I am even seeing the star cards routinely go for more than SMR recently. That was unheard of a year ago.

The biggest threat to card prices in my opinion is not the WIWAG scandal, but rather the possibility of CU going out of business. While they have plenty of assets and no debt, they can't continue to lose money every quarter and stay around forever. With the tock languishing at about $2.50 AFTER a 1:4 reverse split, you gotta be just a little concerned if they can make it. I'm betting they will, but...

    Good collecting to all.

I agree with you on your synopsis of the PSA market and share your concerns.I couldn't have stated it with your professionalism, though. My problem is that I started with 8's and 9's right off the bat with my set.I guess that "mine is bigger than yours"mentality was with me from the very start.image I should have been in the market a year agoimage

One problem with PSA is that they are in Newport Beach, CA. Could they have picked any more expensive place to conduct business? I'm sure the main expense of them doing business is the employees. If they were in the middle of Iowa, their costs would be much cheaper.
  • I DON'T AGREE
  • wacky, i think you are completely wrong. shilling is when you bid on your own auctions. when you call up some of your friends and have them place higher bids for you, that's called something else.
