Set Registry Grades

We haven't heard anything after the poll indicated a significant majority of Set Registry participants agreed with this concept. Perhaps management can comment on their plans?
I have become more and more convinced that a truly world class classic collection cannot be built in only a PCGS holder. There are simply too many of the WOW! coins migrating to NGC because PCGS won't reward them with the proper grade [on the 11 point scale]. Trade dollars were tough enough, and the more I contemplate trying to upgrade to the finest a Seated Dollar set, the more convinced I become that it simply can't be done. [for example, I had the pleasure of viewing perhaps the finest 1866 seated dollar at LB - the Jimmy Hayes specimen. It was in an NGC MS67 holder. Buy it and downgrade it to MS66? I DON'T THINK SO.]
BJ indicated to me that DH was seriously considering the Registry Grade concept. I hope so. Even if he only does it for 19th century and prior, it's an important step in retaining participants. As I promised in the poll thread, if the Set Registry doesn't open up in some manner, my sets will be listed only at NGC. A classic collector is going to have to buy some NGC coins. Be it a 1794 dollar, a high grade proof twenty dollar gold, or a finest known trade or seated dollar. If the Set Registry truly wants to retain those collectors, management will have to find some other choice for them than downgrading their coins. [After all, we know the crossover rate for classic coins is hovering around 5% at best].

I would bet if you sell your 1885 NGC Proof 66 to Bill Gates ...
He could get it crossed.Hang in there as I predict your dream will come true.I have some coins that have taken years to cross. You DO have some nice coins.
ps Presently I can't even get them to put modern Lincoln cents in ms 67 red holders !!

I think you meant to say "Dwight Manley"
PCGS had their grand opportunity this show. The coin was on TV in the LA area and viewed by literally thousands of people at the show. If they didn't cross it this show, they aren't going to cross it.
Frankly, at first I was mad, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I really don't care. I am contemplating a serious upgrade to my Seated set and I recognize that it simply can't be done in only one holder. I am officially through with the concept that only coins in one holder are worth owning. If you have to examine a PCGS coin, determine the grade independent of the label and decide if the price equates to value, then why can't that same process encompass coins in other holders?!
And if the Set Registry isn't flexible enough to adapt to my collecting interests..... well, I know where there is one that is!
I'm guessing that the Money Motive is what is fueling this kind of thread and others seen on the Coin board today as PCGS Coins generally sell for more Money and are more liquid.
TDN you really suprise me on your Registry statement. It sure sounds like a statement I made over on the NGC Board when I was not happy with them and just got the Hell blasted out of myself by many collectors.
Not being critical but this stuff sure seems to show up after every Major Show that has ended since being in contact with these forums. Gets Old just like the Lets Blast a Ebay Seller Threads.
Maybe this is the wrong thread to post this too but in my mind something had to be said

I see no reason to be blasted for this opinion. Classic coins aren't like widgets. They are in finite supply and the portion of that supply that is PCGS graded is a small minority. To limit oneself to one type of plastic holder is to promote mediocrity in one's collection. I won't do it.
Who offered this sage advice?

My other personal collection is pattern nickels. There is no registry for them at all and that is just fine with me. I picked up (3) more pop 1/0 and a pop 2/1 pattern nickel at Long Beach and these (4) coins are just as special even though I have can not "register" any of them anywhere. YOUR COPPER TRADE DOLLAR IN YOUR SET WAS SO COOL AND THERE IS NO WHERE TO REGISTER IT EITHER.
The Registry probably does not breed mediocrity - making the wrong decisions like selling off varieities that are not required in a set or selling off the special NGC coins is what results in the mediocre collections. That choice is everyones. Wondercoin
