Rare 1997-P Washington Quarter PCGS MS-67 (E-Bay)

Listed here with no reserve and starting at a dollar. PCGS lists 6 with none finer, although I believe that this is the 7th coin graded as I made this piece last week.

Wow, the reverse detail is amazing. What keeps the coin from a 68?

    Keith,

Super looking coin. I think I would have expected a ms68. Good luck with it.

Having never seen a clad Washington in 68, can't say what keeps this one from it. It's as nice as my MS-68 state quarters in my opinion, and definitely nicer than the MS-67 state quarters I have, or the other MS-67 clad Washington in my set. I was going through some mint sets at the local shop and this one stuck out like a spotlight.

Great coin Keith. How high do you think it will go?

  • This is a Clad Quarter that is just begging to be resubmitted and to eventually reside in an MS68 holder. I have owned 3 MS68 Clad Quarters and this one has that look unless there is something not shown on the scan. Keith I am on this one for awhile . image

I hope you bid at least 5X what your original bid was. It's a rare coin.

When I was doing a 1965 to 1998 Clad Quarter registery set I bought a 1997-P MS67 and paid $700 + for it as a POP 3 coin I would expect this one to go at $400 to $600 as the top registery guys now have this coin

I figured this coin would sell for $500. However, it's the time of coin that someone (me?) might take a shot at resubmitting for an MS68.

Oh well, good luck to Keith on the auction.

A long-term search of Teletrade will show that 3 have traded publicly in that forum over the years, and that the prices have declined slightly. And of course, I don't claim to be a Washington quarter expert either, always been a Type guy. But if the eventual owner isn't satisfied, I always offer a return, even if it isn't stated in the auction.

Sadly, E-Bay doesn't keep a prices realized archive of their auctions. As many negatives as there generally can be with Teletrade, they do at least provide a good service in that regard.

Keith, is that a scratch on the eyebrow curving back to the hair? Are those nicks on the necks or scratches?
  • keithdagenkeithdagen Posts: 2,025
    To answer Mark's question:

One visible scratch in the left obverse field under Liberty (only one readibly visible without magnification). Couple of light scratches along neck, only visible if you get the right angle and magnification and light. Area above eyebrow I can't be sure on. There is definitely some kind of struck fragment below the eye into the cheek, and the area above appears to be an extension of that, but may just be a light scratch.

That is a very nice coin. Since Ed has mentioned that the top registry guys own this coin, I will say I was one of those Teletrade buyers. It is a very hard coin to find being that the pop report has been stuck on 6 coins since at least June of last year. If this is the seventh then the pop is still not updated yet.

By the way.. there were only 3 66's made in that time as well. I am pleasantly waiting to see if Ed will get back into clad quarters with winning the auction.

Shot at a 68? Not sure.. it would be tough. Got my eyes on it though.

  • WWQ,

The prevailing opinion is that the coin is a solid 67, but probably not 68 material. I defer to the series experts as this is my first real find in the series. I do plan on paying closer attention in the future. I haven't had a lot of opportunities to work on my Type set, so getting back into going through mint sets seems a great distractor.

I have thought about getting back in the Clad Quarter race and have picked up a few here and there. I am heavily commited to State Quarters at this time and resources won't allow me to agressively complete both sets at the same time.I believe that as I upgrade the first 40 issued State Quarters that may become available to me in the next 6 months. My goal is to be a solid 2nd in the registery set by then. I will also need to get the 10 2003 State Quarters as they become available and after that I will have time to purchase some Clad Quarters and complete another set probably not as good as the last set because a lot of the low pop coins are already included in the top sets and I dont think they will become available any time soon. BTW you are plugging along with your set right up the ladder keep going you will get there.

And thanks to you and your help... my set just keeps getting better. I should move up and become #2 (#5 all time) with just a few more 67's. the elusive 68 has eluded me.

Anyway.. my thoughts are that it looks like the series is going to get a lot of attention in the coming months. It is a marvelous series.

I am also trying to finish my silver set .. after todays purchases (I picked up a beautiful 99.7% white 32P in 66 and a nicely toned 35s MS66).. I should be right up there in the silver series as well.

    Keith

A solid 67 in for this particular date is still a great find. I am not sure (since I havent seen yours in person) that mine is as good. Yours does look spectular.
