It isn't uncommon, and I've had a few go 69 at PCGS with the same look, but it isn't a coin I'd keep. Regardless of the holder, to me the scuff eliminates both 69 and dcam.

BTW - It is probably viewed as a die flaw.image

  • Have seen this on other early 80s PR69DCAMS. Even sold a couple of Pr70DCAMS that had similar
marks. If you don't like it today you will probably like it less in the future. The Type 2s are harder to
find problem free than the pops would lead you to believe. I would pass on this one.

  • Thanks for the reply's. This is the second coin, I returned the first whic was worse. I guess I will return this one too. This is the only coin I have had this problem with and Benloe you are right I don't like it. I didn't want to be unfair with the dealer..

I can't tell from the photo, but often what appears to be rub or a scuff can be just some weakness in cameo. The high parts of the coin are the most difficult to impart cameo onto, because they are in the lowest reaches of the die.

More importantly, it doesn't look like a Type 2, but again it's difficult to tell from the photo. Look at the photos of the mintmarks in the Red Book under the SBA section. Or compare it to a 1980 (same as Type 1) and 1982 (same as Type 2).

    I'm almost certain that's a Type I. image
