How would you grade this Morgan?

danglendanglen Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭
I just bought a bunch of Morgans from an estate which I am putting on eBay today. They all look similar to this 1892-S. My theory is that they were dipped a long time ago and never properly rinsed. They were then placed in an album where they have been in 2 x 2s for the last thirty-some years. I had to tear the coins out of the album, because the flips were "welded" to the plastic pages. Just wondering if some of you toning guys agree with my assessment.

I posted this thread a bit earlier but got no responses, so I'll settle for an opinion on grade. However, if some of you "toning" experts care to chime in on my "toning" theory, please feel free to do so.

P.S. I won't flame anyone, no matter how badly they treat my fragile ego image

  • Hard to tell from the scans.....with the discoloring splotches, especially the one over the ear on the obverse almost makes the coin look borderline AU/MS.

    Looks like a XF40/45.

If they are color sploches low MS, if they are rubs low AU. Nice toning.

danglen, I just noticed we posted threads with the same nameimage. I think your coin looks to have a little rub so I will say AU58 but I think the toning would look very good in person. I bet that green is actually blue when viewed in person? mike

Mike, you are correct. The "green" is actually a bluish tint. image And, yes, I plagiarized your title because you were getting a lot of responses on your thread, and I had a "goose egg" going at the bottom of the first page. Some guys just have a literary flair image
