Gambling My Coin Money

I've been saving the family pocket change for the past three months and have about $100 to blow. My kids daily lunch change really adds up. I was planning on using the money on purchasing a coin to help complete a series but I've been presented with an opportunity to gamble in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Blackjack tables, here I come! Hey, there's a chance I may win enough to buy that key lincoln my wife won't let me buy. Wish me luck.

I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

Always looking for nice type coins

    my local dealer
  • I'm heading to the casinos myself tomorrow, though I'm on my way to Nevada casinos. I've had my eye on a 16D at the local coin shop, would be nice to win enough to buy it. Although I don't think I'll be winning much, but you never know.
  • Got a chance, probably not a good one, to upgrade my want list purchase from a Merc 21D to a 16D or a Lincoln 09S to a 09Svdb. Hey, what have I got to lose? Our am I looking for prior penance for blowing $100. My wife would be so proud of that last statement.

Blackjack actually gives the house and the player almost fair odds.

  • Boz, good advice. I don't plan on spending the family fortune though. I do know when to say enough is enough. If I blow the bucks for my 09s, my family pocket change should make up for it in about 4 months.

  • I'm not bringing much with me gambling. I usually spend a lot of time playing the red/black on the roulette table, gives me a 50/50 shot. I actually think my wife bought me a 09s for my birthday thats coming up this week, she has been dropping hints that way. I hope she did.

The day my wife surprises me with a coin that I need would be a monumental ocassion.
  • Combining gambling and investing in coins sounds like an absolutely fantastic way to turn a large amount of money into a very small amount of money.

    Dabugler,

Blackjack is a funny game. You can play perfectly and lose, and occasionally play poorly and be lucky. Whichever you choose, good luck!

  • Its not a perfect 50/50 but really close. I don't see it as investing in coins when I go playing, which is about twice a year -just having fun. I never bring much money and always leave the credit cards and ATM cards at home.
  • I only get a chance to do the casino gambling thing once a year. I only bring enough money that I'm willing to lose. I collect coins. The investment value in what I love to do won't be realized in my lifetime.

    When's the birthday?

My brother is 19 today, I'm 16 on the 12th, my cousin is 6 on the 7th, and I could go on and on with March birthdays!

American-style roulette (with both a 0 and 00) is one of the worst bets in the casino. The house edge is 5.26%.

Blackjack can be a good bet if you find favorable rules and if you play correct strategy, but most people don't. And you have to count cards to make it really favorable.

For good bets that don't require strategy (other than the all-important money-management, of course image):

Craps -- Play the pass line and maximum "odds" bets. With 2x odds the house edge is only 0.6%. In Vegas you can often find games with higher odds -- sometimes as much as 100x odds. If you had the bankroll to play 100x stakes and ride out losing streaks, the house edge approaches zero. The "odds" bets are paid off at true odds, no casino edge. The game is not as complicated as it looks if you just stick to pass line bets, and a lot of fun when somebody is having a good roll... the crowd gets into it.

Baccarat -- Another game often seen as intimidating due to it's origins with the rich and famous, but ridiculously simple. You just put your money on the Banker or Player spot and the dealer does the rest. Player wins a little less than half the time, Banker a little more than half, with a commission deducted from banker winnings to keep the casino edge. The casino edge is similar either way -- 1.17% for Player and 1.36% for Banker -- far better than the even-money bets at roulette.

NOTE: In European roulette, there is only one 0, and there is an en prison rule where even-money bets lose only half when the 0 comes up. That reduces the house edge to a respectable 1.35%. But the airfare is slightly higher. image

Blackjack is not a sucks game. If you knwo how to play, you can (long run) tip the odds in your favor. That is why some casinos blacklist certain people from playing.

You can have a lot of fun without counting into the deck. I bought a book on winning strategies for non-counters. All you have to do is memorize about 50 or so rules (what the dealer has up vs what's in your hand). Book cost me $10 and I turned $100 into $300 on a business trip to Vegas. It was cool because I felt like I had some control (I'll be the casinos love that) and nothing is sweeter than splitting your deck and doubling your bet at the same time for a 4X win. That did happen to me.

  • In this istance I am in full agreement with Blade. I did not buy the book but had had my parents teach me. Know the "rules of the game" and in the long run playing Black Jack pays.

$100.00 is not enough for the long run, but enough to have fun and to get luckyimage

Good luck and don't spend all of Mardi Gras indoors
