counterfeit 1911-p alert

theboz11theboz11 Posts: 6,576 ✭✭✭
Have been doing some buying on Ebay and have come across a couple of counterfeit 1911-p's recently. Talked to a dealer out west that I was interested in buying one from and he assured me that his was real and that he was not aware of 1911-p's being counterfeited. Two days later he writes me an email and said that he had just been handed 3 counterfeit 1911-p 2 1/2's. So if you are buying this particular coin BEWARE!!!!!!!! someone is feeding them into the market.

Daniel, thanks for the warning. Do you have a link to the auction or a picture of one? mike image

sorry mike no link, the ones I found had no die polish marks under the cresent and a depression between the L and I on the obverse and one between the T and headress. Hope this helps spot them. Not easily seen in the photos provided by ebay. Dan

Daniel, thanks for the info. Can the depression be easily seen from a picture? mike
  • I was worried when I saw this -- I just bought a 1911 quarter eagle a few months ago. It doesn't look like it has the depressions you describe, but if you do find some links to some suspect ones it would help put my mind at ease...

    tgilliams:

There was an early great rock star by the name of Gene Vincent that recorded a big hit for Capitol Records in 1956 entitled BE BOP A LULA. Unfortunately, he was severely injured in a taxi cab accident in London in 1960 and his career really never recovered. Another early great rocker, Eddie Cochran was killed. These two guys were great but so much time has passed that... well, I guess that's the reason for your question.

no, Mike they can not, unfortunatly. The dealer that had been handed the other counterfeit's email is darren@americanrarities.com . Maybe he can provide info on what he found.
