2003 Siver Eagles

I know this was brought up once before but I missed the thread. Has anyone else noticed the blob or cud or whatever it is on the sun of the 03 SAE's? I guess it does not lower the grade because my MS69 form PCGS has it also. I have checked the rest of the previous years and the 03 is the only year that has it. I checked 3 of my 03's from the roll and they also have this mark on it.It is noticable because my son picked up on it right away without me saying anything. Does anyone know anything about the cause? Could this be one of those first strike situations that will be cleared up with later strikes?

I just checked my four 2003 SAEs (2 raws, 1 NGC ms69, and 1 PCGS MS69) and I didn't notice anything unusual in the sun area.

  • I dont really know how to do this but I will try. See on this example at about 9 PM. It looks like a bump on this coin but it is actually discolored when viewed at 10x.

  • Just checked my NGC MS70 2003 SE and if I hold at an angle I see and very small "circle" on bottom portion of the sun an almost round "blob"- about size of pinhead. Seen thru a 3x magnifying glass and becomes more apparant. Checked my other eagles and this does not appear.

Both my PCGS/NGC eagles were checked. Both sets are almost or complete to date with the PCGS proofs(missing only 1995-W) and NGC set is complete. Very interesting observation and would be interested, as you are, at what caused this also. Very hard to see unless specifically looking for it. Maybe a die error. Never know we have low minted error and can "cash in" on this-Wishful thinking. TG

My PCGS Collector Club Edition 2003 Silver Eagle has the same thing in the sun, as shown in the link.
