If a coin is not a proof,why does it get a proof description?

A morgan gets DMPL or PL yet SMS coins get Cam or DCAM.Why is this?

A guess...because the SMS sets replaced the proof sets, whereas the Morgans with the PL designations were simply business strike coins minted with fresh polished dies. Apples and oranges.

PL wouldn't be a very descriptive term for SMS coins since most are PL.
