OT.... Wide A M Lincolns!?!?

image I'm starting to develope loop eyes from looking through at least 1000 pennies from my coin jar{old 5 gallon glass water bottle} over the past few weeks. I have yet to run accross one of these yet. If anyone has found one or a few, let me know which region of the US you live in. I live in Panama City Beach, Fla., and for some reason it seems that most of the pennies that are in this region were minted in Denver.

If you have one please post a picture! Most of views I've seen are pretty small! Thanks!!

  • Is this what you're talking about?
    2000P Type2

There reportedly Type 2s in 2001 and 2002 as well.

In the Red Book, they go back to 1998-2001. They were supposed to been struck with a proof reverse die?image
I still can't find one or a larger picture of one!!

Thanks Wayne, now I've got to dig through my cents again, because I recall seeing some of the earlier dates with a wide A M, and passed on them because of the years and Type changes. That report will help and I printed it out.image

RedBook does NOT list 2001 as having the type 2 reverse, nor does it list the 1997. I was unaware of the 1997 variety. Now, that is another I need to look for. Thanks for the article Wayne. I wonder which is rarer, the 1997 or the 1999.

These coins were not struck with proof reverses, they are coins struck with dies that received impressions from an older style working hub. I have examined a couple dozen of these coins, and there is no sign of proof finish on any of them. If they had been struck with proof dies, there would be an indication of such on the coins.

    Does anybody have a 99? I have 98, 00, and 01, but have been unable to find a 99.

  • Coppercoins likely has much better information than I do, but it was my understanding that the 2001 variety had been discovered and authenticated and was supposed to be included in the new redbook but did not make the printing date. Also, I've heard rumors that a 2002 variety exists as well (discovered by the same person) and that it has been authenticated as well.

    Can anyone verify/disspell this? Thanks!

Jeff.To know what the type 2 reverse looks like just look at the reverse of a red 1983-94 or so Lincoln.

Ok They dont have to be red.Just the early dated Zincolns 1983-96 or so.When was the so-called type 1 reverse
    introduced .1994?

Just in case there's some confusion here, the "older style working hub" that coppercoins mentions is the one that is used to make proof reverses. Therefore, they are not struck with a proof reverse die as coppercoins says, but from a die with an impression meant (intended) for a proof reverse die. I'm kind of curious as to why this continues to happen. You also have to wonder why they don't standardize all the dies. image

I found a 1999 and a 2000 myself and bought a 1998 from Ken Potter. Since PCGS still refuses to recognize these all mine have been sent to NGC to Slab. I did not know there are 2001s and 2002s.

imageCRUD, I'm still digging through all the ones I culled earlier. image Region of finds would be nice because I don't know if I'm wasting my time, but I know I've seen some in the earlier '90's and I wish I had separated them as I went through them. The biggest irratation is most of the cents in this area are Denver mint, as well as all other coinage in general circulation.

The Illinois quarter is a fine example as well as all other denominations!image
