Home U.S. Coin Forum

Why a reasonable quantity of high quality off topic posts here is good and why people want to post t

I saw Michael Jackson's "new look", have read about somebody's new power seller accolade and intentions to give everyone feedback,
have read many opinions about the impending war and even started a thread or two that were off topic and admitedly so, as stated
in my title (...OT....)

And I was thinking about the issue of topics posted here that are off topic or are only so tangentially related to U.S.Coins that you have
to strain to even find that thin thread...

...and have thought about why i like to read and occasionially post OT threads (as opposed to posting them in the open forum) and
participate in OT threads and i think i have concluded that it satisfies a sense of community.

Reading and posting here is reading and posting to a forum where we know each other. That's why things get posted here instead of
to a different and potentially more appropriate forum.

I for one don't go to the other forums. I don't know anyone there (unless they're from here) and don't want to spend the time getting
to know people in other forums. Knowing the personalities of the posters here takes time and it allows you to qualify the opinions
and thoughts posted here.

This is "home" for me for now (even if i am sent to my room on occasion) and it satisfies my need for a sense of community, which is
good, because unlike my neighbors, to get rid of you guys, all i have to do is turn off my computer.

  • I usually read "most" of the threads on this board. Although I reply to very few. I totally agree that posting off topic threads is a positive thing. It allows people like me (who doesn't visit the open forum) to share in the views of fellow members.

I agree with you about a sense of community. I sell a lot more darkside coins than US issues, but somehow I spend all my "forum" time right here. An OT topic every once in a while is a good thing image

  • Hey! I agree with Adrian! image ?!

I'm sure many of us here consider many others friends, and you want to share things with friends. It does give an extra side to the community.

In the same vein, I believe a few mild "troll wars" or "flame threads" suit the same purpose: a place to mouth off a little, a place to definitely get to know another side of a few. As long as it doesn't get too ugly. All wine and roses is boring.

P.S. Probably best to put "OT" in the title so those who wish to can pass it by.

  • Amidst all the inhumanity in our world, there are spots where one of the lovely things about humanity comes through...

The people of this forum demonstrate the good stuff about humanity.

Its kinda hard to get into a flame war with somone you have had lunch with at a show.

The more we all meet, the better everything gets.

  • I agree -- the off-topic posts are sometimes the most important in a given day. I've thought of starting one or two, from time to time...
