Would you rather coin prices go up this year, or come down?

If coin prices go up, your current collection will be worth a lot more.

If they come down, you can buy a lot more for your money.

Your answer to this may determine if you're more "investor" or more "collector."

Any opinions?

  • Since I'm a newcommer to the hobby....I'd MUCH rather they go down image

Are you selling something I need for my 20th Century Type Set? Please take a look and let me know....

  • I would expect to say that I would hope coin prices would come down so that I could buy more coins .... but stock prices have come down for three years and I want no part of buying more stocks.
Very often emotion takes precedence over logic. Let coin prices go up.
  • Because I have learned a great deal in the past year and have concentrated my collection on a certain few series. I'd like to see coin prices go down so I can finish these sets a bit cheaper. Since I am saving a few bucks here or there, once I complete a series I will have that extra money to move on to the next series.

Although I consider myself more of a collector now, I do tend to think like an investor. (buy low/sell high)

  • Since I'm strictly a collector, I would rather see the prices drop. I'm sure at some point I'll want to sell and want higher prices, and it does make the hobby a little more exciting when prices are climbing, but, for my own present self interest, I'd like to be able to buy coins cheap.

Those 1901-S quarters are too expensive. They should come down a bit.

Absolutely go down! I like coins, the more the better, especially the better ones.

Collectively we do determine the direction of prices. If people are net collectors
and want the prices to come down then their demand will push prices higher. If
more people are looking to sell then they'll want higher prices and push them
    lower.

What's the likelyhood that the coins that any of us want will be on the market if the prices go down? Very likely the current owners will sock them away waiting for the prices to go up.

While I'd rather buy coins for less than they currently cost, I really think they will only be available if the prices remain the same or go up, although there will always be the case of someone needing money liquidating a collection, that will never happen anywhere near me.image

I'd much prefer to see them go down, or at least stay relatively stable.

    Thats's an easy one.

Let the pieces I have already aquired continue upward,

But hold off on the ones I want that I have not yet obtained.

This is a no-brainer....I want the coins that I am selling to go up....and the coins I haven't purchased yet to come down image Anything else burns up gray cells image

  • My opinion is you think coins are overpriced because you say "come down" instead of "go down".

As a collector I've always liked mildly bear markets because that's when you can make the best buys. I never like to see things $uck too much because then all the good stuff is off the market.

As a dealer I like stready running markets. I HATE runaway boom markets because as a small dealer it's hard to tie up so much capital to get good material. I also have seen the merry-go-round stop on such markets, and when it does some people including my customers and me can get hurt very badly. I like steady grownth. AND I like it when the non-collector investor types stay out of the coin market where they belong. All they do is make some money for a few big dealers and end up hurting most collectors and usually themselves in the end.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

This question is the one that separates the collectors from the speculators/investors. I vote down--that tells you in which camp I sit.

How can prices come down with all these coin hungry addicts on these boards ready to gobble them up? As soon as they dropped, the hard core collectors would hold on to their stash till prices improved, while buying into the dip, thereby driving the prices right back up! If everyone started collecting bottle caps for one year, then returned to coin collecting, we might get some decent prices at first! image

I would like to see the prices go down, I need to buy some more coinage.

  • As a net buyer I prefer that prices drop!
  • Wow, I'm kinda surprised by all the "down" responses! image I would have guessed most people would want coin prices to go up, increasing the value of their collections, but I'm certainly glad to see all the collector-type answers.

I thought of this question while doing my usual eBay searches and noticing that many slabbed coins were selling for quite a bit more than what I had paid for mine in the same holder and grade. I immediately felt good about my collection's value. But that feeling was short lived when I realized that the coins I need to complete my set were also selling for more than what I thought they should be. So, I wasn't sure what I should be "rooting" for. image

It would be interesting to see some of the dealers on the board weigh in on this.
