Toned Illinois quarter

I have an Illinois P mint quarter from a new roll that I got yesterday that is completely charcoal gray in color on both the obv and rev. Anyone know if this is common? Have never seen one before. It looks like it was struck from metal stock that was obviously handled or treated in a manner different from the norm.

I have seen this before on several occassions.

  • I've seen a number of quarters that have a sort of gun metal look, so I would say it's fairly common. I'm not sure what causes this. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it's an improper alloy mix of some kind, or something went slightly awry in the preparation. image
