New Nickel Reverse

From the paper today:

"Under a bill that passed 412-5, the U.S. Mint would get the go-ahead to change the image on the back side of the nickel over the next three years to commemorate the bicentennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and the 1804-06 Lewis and Clark expedition. In 2006 Monticello, Jefferson's home, would return."

Sounds like we'll have bicentennial Jeffersons to add to our collections. I wonder if they'll mint them with two years like they did with the quarters?

    I heard this was going to be the new design:

  • The article wasn't clear. If they're coming out "over the next three years" and reverting in 2006, wouldn't that mean they'd have to come out with them this year? I can't imagine them switching the reverse mid-year, but who knows?

    So when is Virginia going to start a civil war over the 5c piece??

    I think they ought to put the back of his head on the reverse.image

    It'll be cool to get more changes than just state quarters. Should cause new collectors to come into the hobby and more sheisters to rip them off. Still, a welcome change! Now if they can get rid of FDR, change from JFK, and go back to a multi-squeeze hub/die method...

    Interesting source for a Jefferson that appears to have -0- steps!

  • Any guesses as to whether they'll change the lincoln cent in 2009? Maybe retire the penny entirely?

    In a recent article I read that the people at the mint are still eyeing 2003 for the new nickel release, that does indeed indicate that we will have 2 designs this year (if they keep to that schedule). I really like the idea of multiple releases in a year. It adds to the interest level (at least for me - I guess I'm easily amused).

    I think they should just kill the half dollar all together. It hasn't circulated since 1964, and is really rather pointless. If they kill it now, I won't have to buy another Eagle album for my set.image

    I agree. I think they should make a circulating commemorative half dollar, changing the design every year. Sure, it won't really circulate, but halves don't circulate anyway, so it won't make much difference.

    Russ, I know you're joking, but I think it would be great if they adopted that reverse (which was Felix Schlag's original design) for the "return to Monticello." (That lettering, though is a little too art deco, and looks dated.)

    This is an awful bill, and I hope it will be defeated. It sets a horrendous precedent. It mires us in stasis. At the very least, we need a new depicition of Monticello on the reverse.

  • BNE, I've been to Monticello several times and the view shown on the current nickel is the best.

  • Here`s something in PDF. The bill is H.R. 258 - American 5-Cent Coin Design Continuity Act dated Febuary 26,2003. According to the bill, the new design is to start this year!?

    Interesting PDF on the H R 258 bill.

    Seems the authority was there to redesign the reverse for 2002 but they didnt act on it (H R 4903).

    Did anyone notice that the mints had a combined mintage of only about
    six million nickels in January? It sure seems something's up.

    Here are some interesting footnotes. I have yet to find any inf. that the new design will start this year.

    The Expedition departed St. Louis, Missouri on May 14, 1804;

    The Expedition returned to St. Louis, Missouri, on September 23, 1806, after a 28-month journey covering 8,000 miles during which it traversed 11 future States: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon;

    I saw that too on the Mint website.Not many `03 Jeffs made thus far.Shouldnt there have been more
    by this time normally?
    Also is this new reverse Jeff not up for review by the general public before its inception?
    What the heck IS it going to look like anyway.

  • I am looking forward to a new reverse on the Nickel.

    I agree totally with BNE that we should not return to the current reverse. Us Full Step Nickel Club members do like Felix Schlag's original reverse as shown on Russ's medal. So if that very political bill forces us to return to a Monticello reverse at least let's change it some.

    There are still 101 people who haven't expressed their opinions.

    The Senate failed to vote on an identical bill in the last session, and if they ever do, GWB will have to (literally) sign off on it before it becomes effective. Lately he hasn't shown much interest in anything unrelated to Iraq.

    Perhaps a rendering of the two Senators from Virginia, dressed in baby clothes crying about losing Monticello, could grace the reverse in 2006?
