Question for seller email I received-and my response

I am posting this purely for entertainment value. I am sure that there are some, maybe quite a few of you that may not like my response to the email I sent back....

The auction

Here is an email that I received:

Hi:

Isn't your starting price rather high???

Thx,

Robert

And here is my response:

Rather high?????? It's RIDICULOUSLY high. Then again I love the coin...it's much prettier than the scan and I don't really want to part with it. But if somebody is willing to pay the price, I guess I would sell it.

With a feedback of only 5 you may or may not be new to eBay... but the kind of email you sent me serves no real purpose. Don't waste my time. I hear the new BMW 7-Series cars are out and they want $68,500. You may want to send them a note asking them if their price is "rather high". See the point? image

  • You know if he would put that coin in a heritage auction i bet he would get at least that much for it if not more.
To funny, but after seeing what the toned morgans sold for last night i don't think his asking price is to high.

    Dan,

I think your response was rude and insensitive. Have you no consideration for the delicate sensibilities of others?

Emails like that trip me out. I had a reserve on a CC that I didn't want to take a beating on and I guess this guy was the eBay price police because he quoted some kind of price guide and said I should cancel my auction.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Regardless if its too high or not I love the obverse. However, is that a big arse fingerprint above the eagles head on the reverse?
  • is that a big arse fingerprint above the eagles head on the reverse?

    Yep.

Has anybody ever dipped just half a coin?

    Dan
  • I would have responded EXACTLY the same way.

I wonder how people like the person who sent the email make it through the everyday complexities of life.

Some people send me emails about how to get passports when it is CLEARLY stated on my website on how to get a passport through our service.

    Example of a typical email:

    Joe customer:

How do I get a passport?

I feel like sending this email back..........

    Dear Joe customer:

you read the f-r-e-a-k-i-n-g w-e-b-s-i-t-e you IDIOT!

But the response I always send is:

Please read the passport section of our website at www.quickpassport.com. All the instructions are located there. If you have any further questions please call our office.
  • I dont feel the need to question, nor do I waste my time with what someone wants to charge for their coin. If the price is set too high, it will become painfully obvious to the seller after about five or six relistings pass without a sale. image

Actually, that guy must not know the toned Morgan market. For an end roll coin with those colors, and pattern, and a 65 to boot I think your price is very reasonable. This is why I try to sell my coins directly first, I hate dealing with eBay cheapskates who think they ought to be able to buy even nicely toned coins at bluesheet. I think you were gentle with him, I wouldn't have been so nice and he would have landed on my blocked bidder list, as well as my email killfile.

Not all sellers. I've been watching one Two Cent piece that's on it's 7th relist at about double market. I keep waiting for the guy to wake up and smell the coffee and lower the price so I can buy the thing.

I was going to mention that, but the sensitivity police are out and I didn't want to be accused of attacking anyone's character. image

  • Only two problems with your response Dan -

    Either:

    1. The guy is real stupid, and your sarcasm went waaaaaaay over his head.image

    or

    2. He's the King of the Newbies, and your sarcasm went waaaaaaay over his head.image

Or this guy thinks you're a patsy and if you cancel your auction you'll find him sending you an email saying you did the right thing and that he'll pay you $75 for it, which is all he says it's worth...
  • sinin1sinin1 Posts: 7,500
Russ, the market is off on that 2 cent piece, you will just have to pay more to buy itimage

Rover, I think I would send the guy another email saying something like->

After reviewing my listing, I think I erred and if I need to re-list it, I will change the BIN price to $695.

    I recall e-mailing a seller the following:

I can't tell for certain in the photo provided in your auction, but is that a fingerprint at 9:00 on the obverse?

    His reply:

    "Maybe"

That was his entire reply. What a dipshirt.

That price is not out of line. I agree with k6az for the same reasons. The market will tell us the price, and it will tell us, I think, that he is in the ballpark.

I agree with Pushkin and Russ in that I think the reply was way too harsh. We do need to try to be nicer to folks, especially ones we don't even know.

The reply may seem harsh at first glance, but have any of you been on the receiving end of some really nasty emails from buyers? I actually got one that called me a sheister and highway robber. There are cheapskates out there who will send you antagonistic emails for daring to have a reserve at greysheet ask, instead of bluesheet. If this guy was sincere who emailed rover, he could have asked something to the effect of why the coin was worth that much, but not making a statement. A little tact will go a long ways both ways, but I have about had it with bluesheet toting ebay buyers.
  • This toned coin thing is an area I don't get into. I do notice there's no bids yet.

What's the difference between E-bay and a coin show. If a dealer had a coin on his table, and you told him you think it's way too much. If he rudly answered, yes, it's a high price if you don't like it shove off. I would never buy from that dealer again. Yes, now and then people ask stupid questions, for make sarcastic comments, it's all a part of selling. If you treat them with respect, they might see your point and be the high bidder on your overpriced coin!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I think you did real good.....................Ken
  • Every once in a while I will have someone send a email saying my prices are too high in my business and that we are ripping people off. This is one thing that irritates me! I can tell by most of the emails it is some teenager or young person that did not take the time to read what we do. I have a real problem with someone that points fingers without talking to my company or at the very least read our website.

how this relates to your person emailing you is that they obviously do not know what they are talking about and they sent the email without educating themselves.

    grrrrrrrr
