Security at shows

This is my 2nd show. I used to live in LB, but moved due to rising crime rate, the armed mugging may have had a factor in our decision to move, so i'm kinda jaded about LB being safe

1) I will be purchasing a large amount of inventory in Long beach and kinda need some imput on what I should do, some of the items will be bulky (GSA's) should I carry around a brief case or does this make me stand out, or does it make for an easy grab and run. I don't want to stand out, but need a way to haul around my purchases. I can't remember what people were walking around with at the F.U.N show, I do remember one guy with a battered and torn cardboard box bungee strapped to the top of one of those grocery bag carts,

I will only be at the show for one day, can't take coins to hotel and storing them in the car seems kinda outa the question

2) What are the do's and don'ts to prevent theft at a show

One technique is the old standby: Safety in numbers. Just having someone (or more) walk with you. I will be going on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. I can send you my beeper number and I'd be more than happy to walk with you.

If it were me, I would not dress in an Armani suit and would not carry a large expensive briefcase. I would dress very casual and carry a soft sided bag or simple briefcase if necessary. As someone else added on here one time.....do not wear any type of dealer ID on your clothing outside of the show! I guess I would say don't draw any unecessary attention to you outside of the show when you are leaving with your stuff and walking to your car/hotel.

    security at shows?? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i guess common sence is the watchword here but being anamonous/unknown is the key but thasyt is hard to do if you do coins on a regualr basis

but common sence is really uncommon downright rare!

    sincerely michael
  • Hey this is a serious question and a serious problem . Here In the middle of the country (indiana) we dont have shows quite as big as LB. So the sercurity isnt as big of a problem. I know at our upcoming local show there is always at least 1 sherrif there, last year there were 3 by the virtue of 2 of them shopping for coins. They would walk you to your car if you asked them to. I dont know if long beach has actual cops there if they dont I like what was said in an earler post there is sercurity in numbers. 1 person is a major target 2 people You cut your chances by half so on and so forth. So I say bar a sherrif or some other law enforcement walking you to your car take more then one other person and make sure they are adults and make sure they are people you know.

Its too bad the postal service doesn't set up a booth at the big shows so that you can mail your stuff to your home.

Actually, I"ve seen the USPS at Long Beach and you could send stuff to your home.

  • USPS will be at the Long Beach show...go to the stamp section, that's where they'll be set up.
  • Just buy a AK47 and walk around with it over your shoulder
seems to work well at gun shows
LOOKING FOR 1931-s merc that is nice for the grade and fb

May I offer a suggestion that works very well....most large shows have a postal center....take coins and ship them to your secured address...ie post office box etc....ship insured/registered....this way you have no worries....best, Jon

Are you going tomarrow? Just wondering since it's the only day I can go but I'll be there all day from open to close.
Friends are Gods way of apologizing for your relatives.

    Nope...the Navy needs me....

The size and scope of LB rather intimidates me...I'm gonna have to work up the guts to go sometime...I think it would be like the San Diego Zoo, you'd need more than one day to see it all...plus I've heard it's such a hassle for parking anywhere near the site.
  • Parking is a pain and somewhat expensive, that's why I take the bus.

I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at that one! Maddox, like Sacramento is any safer ?!! Crime is everywhere, talk to someone you know and they will have been a vicitim or know a victim. I will also bet they were victimized in an area they considered "safe".

As for security at the show? Brahahahaha. Yeah, security to make sure you pay your $4!!!

This seems to be an ongoing myth by collectors that they are targets the minute they take a coin out of a show/bank/shop/etc. I have read 3 stories on the boards this year where people have been victimized and each time it was by someone they knew! Once by their grandkids I believe.

Look, why is someone going to bop you over the head for a couple hundred of dollars in coins when they can steal / car jack your car which is easier to steal and sell.

I promise the last time I will say this. If you are ripped off of high priced coin [s] on your person or in your home / office, suspect the people you know NOT strangers. Fear your friends deep in debt, your kid's friends on drugs, your envious bro/sis in law, your coin buddy who lost his job, etc. This is so obvious, ask any law enforcement person and they will say the same thing.
