<< <i>Very early, I have a Trade Dollar in this kind of holder. Not the first generation, since the first had the black core, but very soon after that. >>
What do you mean by "black core"? The part that grips the coin?
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
I have a San Diego commemorative in that kind of holder that was purchased before 1995. It has a gold scale embossed into the back, no barcode front or back. Pre 1995 is the best I can tell you as that would indicate when I got it.
I have one like this. It's got the gold label on the back (instead of hologram). Actually, 2. One is a rainbow morgan, the other a merc. The morgan's grade, I think is 63 but they had it at 64 (bumped for rainbow) and the merc is 65 (don't disagree).
It is either a 3rd generation (1987 - 89) or 4th generation (1989 - 92). The auction does not show the bak of the slab and it doesn't mention whether it has a hologram on the back or not so you can't tell for sure which it is.
Rwhite,
The first generation holder you posted is mine. That is the coin in my reference set and the example used to represent the variety in the book. I need to redo the scans though, it just doesn't do it justice. It is much nicer in person.
