The next fad might be toned Peace $. I went in and thought about bidding, but all the toned Peace $ were won by fax or phone bidders with really strong bids. The coins opened above the hammer estimates provided by Goldberg. I stayed an hour to get to 3 coins that I didn't even have a chance to bid on.
I attended the dollars and commems. Both were very soft. Many of the nicely toned Morgans went back to the consignor. Rather surprising.
I think it had to do with unrealistic expectations, many people have wrongly concluded that any coin with SOME bright toning on it is worth big bucks (and unfortunately some newbies have been feeding that thinking) but in reality the coin must have clean unbroken toning with a well defined pattern to be really worth the money most hope for. With todays youth loving anything with bright colors (just look at your kids cloths, toys, etc.) top notch color coins will always have a demand with emphasis on top notch not just anything with some bright color. You see a lot of pieces with distracting spots of broken or badly scuffed toning (eye sores) which do not have the appeal to experienced collectors regardless of the look of the rest of the toning.

Sad to see so many chase these coins in the past. As with all fads, it too will come to an end.
Oh well, back to the shows and Ebay.
