It's either circulated & AU or if it's MS it's probably around 64.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

    Looks AU.

  • Looks like a middle of the road AU, 55 perhaps? BUT...it looks fairly lifeless, like it was in the dip too long or possibly polished up. I fail to see the lustre one would expect to see on such a specimen. Personally, I'd pass on this one.

The angle of the scan makes it tough to grade. It doesn't look original to me. The 84-s usually is well struck and this coin is too, but it is missing that original lustre that can be tough to find for this date. With the usual disclaimer, I would grade it in the AU 50 range without having the benefit of examining the coin.

  • Coincat,
I am new at collecting Morgans. This is my first purchase but I have not received it yet.
I thought maybe it might be toned and also the lighting plays a great deal on how the
may look in the picture...I am hopeing for a MS but if it is not it will be ok for I got the coin
I think at a good price. If the coin shows no wear but has no luster...what might you think
has happened to the luster...I dont know anything about toned coins or ways in which
people doctor up these coins...I appreciate your informative feedback.

Good luck with the purchase. The 84-s is very tough to come across MS 60 and higher. It is readily available AU50 through 58, but original coins are tougher to get than most collectors realize in light of the fact that most of these coins are dipped in anticipation of getting a higher grade from the services. In high AU and MS, the 84-s, 86-o, 92-s and 01 are all almost impossible to grade accurately from a scan. Consider looking for original coins in your search for Morgans...also have some fun and look for some of the VAMs. No Morgan set is complete without some.

  • My first impression of the photos is that the coin is cleaned/polished. Lighting and angle have alot to do with what a coin looks like in a photo though. I hope that you get it and it turns out to be a great AU, if so good coin.
  • Thank You CoinCat...I sure will do that...I like the pertty ones, that is the ones I can afford...but they are a part of American History and that is what I love about them the most.
  • MrPawn,
If it were polished wouldnt it have more of a worn down look to it(in high spots)..I thought when I looked at it that it could be worn in high places but then again could just be the picture...Another thing about dipping...if dipped and the luster was removed...how many grades would that take the coin down...If its an AU I still will be pleased for such a rare coin as this one. I think it still remains a well defined coin. I am hoping anyway...Another question about grading...If I sent this into a grading service and it had been dipped, would they bodybag it?
  • Really hard to tell from the photo, strike looks so-so as the hair above the ear is lacking detail, chest feathers look very smooth, again not much detail. could be the photo or the coin. My first impression is that it has been polished, something about the cheek that bothers me. I would expect mid AU, still good for a hard to find coin. keep us updated.

  • Maddox, Those are the points that I looked at also...just plain hard to tell..anyway I think I will be happy with the coin...if it is an AU I still got a good deal...I am going to hold it for an investment...In time I figure it will be worth far more than I payed...Yes and if it is better than what the picture indicates I will let you all know for sure.
  • It looks to me like an AU55.

It also looks like a very good possibility that it has been cleaned (when you get it look for lots of scratches going everywhere).

If it has been cleaned, the big grading services would bodybag and ANACS would AU details net XF45.
I hope I am wrong, but light and angle on coin is very deceptive.
  • Sinin, If you turn out to be right...the guy will get the coin back...his thoughts on the coin were MS60+...so at the price I payed, he will get it back...I hope you are wrong too! I would be happy with an AU55 though.
  • Polished does not mean always mean that someone took a Brillo Pad to it. Look at the details in this average MS65 1880S Morganimage (Borrowed from a current eBAy auction since my digital photo skills bite) ebay# 3009303595. I do not know this seller and I am neither endorsing nor disparaging this auction

If you compare the highpoints of this coin to the 1884 S you will see that many of the finer details are actually absent. Some of this could be due to weak strike but these were usually well struck coins. There is also a certain effect in the photo that tends to show up with cleaned/polished coins.

Again take this as it is - just my opinion and not gospel. Still learning myself.

edit to add: Photo was chosen to show details only
  • Mrpawn,
I see what you are speaking of with the detail to the hair...mine does appear to have worn areas....I also agree that the lighting was bad on mine and do agree to that it may have been done to be deceptive...but I really will not know until I receive the coin...The coin you have shown is a beautiful coin..it sure is bright and shiney...looks like mirror proof like to me...the size of the scan on yours too alows for more detail to be shown...which I find great...mine is not as large as should have been for such a rare grade as the seller was insinuating it to be...but then again I will not be able to tell until I get it...But I sure do appreciate all of you guys helping me out...If I find it to be below my standard , It will not be the first coin I have returned to a seller...I love my coins and when I buy them I want them to be the best I can afford...I know I can not afford the real expensive ones but I do at least expect to get what I have payed for...I know in this coin business some people are really dishonest, and its a real shame...But I do appreciate your help and I have a great deal to learn also.
  • I hope that when you get it you find that it was all in the lighting and you have a honest AU or better.
  • Mrpawn, I hope so too...sure would be nice...and not disapointing...I know how that is to when someone advertises one thing and you get another...its a real let down...Thank You Mrpawn you have been a great help.
