Jefferson quandry

GaCoinGuyGaCoinGuy Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭✭
I picked up a 1943-P Jefferson in an old old old PCGS slab graded MS65. After some 10X viewing, I think it will get FS, but I doubt it will go 65, has a cut in the middle of his head behind the eye, and a smaller one near his mouth, and looks like someone sneezed on him........quandry is, should I take a shot and see if it gets the FS and drop the grade or leave as is? Not real knowledgable about Jeffersons(or any other series for that matter), but thinking of starting me a set. I paid about 25% below MS65 PCGS price guide for it, so if it winds up in a drawer somewhere, its no huge loss. Just looking for opinions.

I think you can send it in for designation review and it will be reviewed for FS status without having the grade changed, would be a good question for the Q&A board to get answered straight from PCGS.

you should be able to submit it for designation review, in which case the numerical grade would remain the same but it would be designated as FS if it indeed qualifies as such. it would be reholdered, of course. probably the best thing to do is to call PCGS and explain to customer service that it's an older holder and they should explain the procedure and fees to you.

    good luck.

Thanks for the answers, I reposted over in the Q&A forum, so maybe I can get it reviewed. To the naked eye, it's a nice coin, but for the spots.

    Jeff,

Yes, you can do designation review and keep the same grade and they'll give steps if it qualifies. You can also go for a regrade. Here, too, your grade can't go down, only up. Designation review is cheaper so that's the way to go on coins you don't think have a shot at an upgrade. You'll also have to pay shipping both ways (and return shipping is $12.50 minimum. Add it all up and it may not be worth the expense on a 65 coin. If you're planning to sell it, you me be able to get close to FS money by pointing out it has FS but was graded before the FS designation was in use by PCGS.
