Any guesses as to why PCGS hasn't updated their price guide in two years?

I know that daily, weekly or even monthly updates to their web based price guides are a little too much to expect, but come on now, the last ASE price they list is for 2001!!!! Anyone here know why that is?

In an insane society, a sane person will appear to be insane.
  • In January the price for a full set of ms69 eagles was $1,680.00. By February the price for the same set was $1,420.00. They devalued as follows:

    1993 was 235.00 now 200.00
    1994 was 250.00 now 150.00
    1995 was 200.00 now 125.00
    1996 was 300.00 now 250.00

You have to pay very careful attention, but they are updated on occasion.

As far as ending in 2001, I don't think the mint ever released mintage figures past that year and these figures will have to come into play when they decide the value. So, blame the mint, but I think PCGS is doing their best to keep these tables updated.

  • Go by tha price list at any time and you'll get burned. . .yes, I speak from experience.

PCGS is REALLY working my last nerve. I've been loyal to them for SO long (thru a dealer before and recently direct submissions), but my latest submission results are telling me to seek out another grading service. I don't know if they are just in too much of a hurry lately or they've hired a few people who, quite frankly, have no clue what they are doing.

As soon as I've recovered from my depression, I'll post what I feel is a severe case of conservative grading on a bust half.

Probably just don't get the data to actually adjust the prices. I do know one thing, though, if I could get DHRC to buy my 66RD Lincolns for half the price he sells them for, I'd be a happy man. image

Their product stays valuable... on eBay, someone mentions a $10 coin's $100 value... someone bids still too high and the slab is still overpriced, and PCGS gets the best prices for coins... so simple imageimage

Because it's so out of touch with reality, it doesn't need to be updated.

Speaking of not being updated, does anyone know why Larry Briggs' web site hasn't been updated in 2 years (show schedule, inventory, etc.)?
  • A year ago PCGS.com listed a 1908 no motto $20 Saint MS-66 at $2095. Four months later it jumped to $2900. I bought mine for $1950 in Nov 2001
and sold it to a dealer at LB in June 2002 for $2150. Ebay people are always trying to get PCGS.com prices for their coins. For the most part,
I don't think they are very successful. Gold also started moving up around that time ($275 to $325).

I'll download the greysheet on Wednesday and head up the 5 on Friday. I have no idea what will happen!

    Good question.

I've sent Rick and David several updates on prices for high end Ikes, stating what I'll pay for some of the ultimate rarities. I'll buy some of them for $1000 more than the price guides retial price.

Now step down one grade level and the prices are too high.

I can't tell you how many people e-mail me thinking they can get the less than 10 pop coins for the same percent discount as the 100-300 pop coins.

You would think PCGS would respond a little better and quicker.

It comes down to money and manpower ... keeping an accurate and realistic price guide would require at least one full-time employee. I suspect the price guide is catch as catch can.
