I decided what to collect to start with!!!

OK so I hemmed and I hawed and I thought about it and almost went with modern type set from 1950-present but then I realized that every time a new coin comes out I have to get it for my collection and decided I wanted Some thing with a start date and an end date and a definite amout of coins in the series so I went with the 20th century no gold cirrculation type set. My next question is how high a grade do these coins need to be? Most of them that I see in the regisry sets Seem to be like ms64 or better. Can I still have a registered set if they are not that high in grade? Can I have an entire set of g4 coins and still be registered? Just wondering. I will probabley go with as high as I can afford but would like to see my set eventually registered.

Peace y'all have a good night I'm going to bed and will check here in the morning.

  • Joshiah,

Welcome to the forums! I hope you enjoy your stay here with us. (The pod grows!)

If you're speaking of the PCGS registry, any grade of coin that they have grade will go into a registry set (Braddick has some P01s and such image).

I think your choice seems great to me! Type sets are fun, educational, and present lots of fun challenges. Enjoy!

P.S. It's great to have a dad around... I hope both of you find it enjoyable as a pair, as well as individually.

What a well reasoned approach. It is a good jumping off point when you decide you love one series as well. Good luck, and welcome.

    Just some words of advice:

Grade: Collect in the grades that the coins look nice to you. If you don't like the look of VFs then don't buy them - even if you can't currently afford XFs.

Slab: Buy nice coins, not just PCGS coins. Yes, you cannot stick non-PCGS coins in their registry. Who cares!! Are you a coin collector or a registry set collector?

Coins: Do not buy a coin just because PCGS says it is needed for the set. Buy a coin because you like it. If you hate Liberty nickels, then don't buy one just to add to your set.

If you participate in the PCGS Registry grade does not matter as long as they coins are in PCGS holders. Board member Braddick makes sets of the LOWEST possible grades he can find, such as AG, GOOD VG, etc and has a lot of fun doing it.
Of course the higher you want to be in the rankings the higher the grades need to be.
I was working on about 5 sets including the set you mention and it was fun.
I gave it up because the set compositions didn't jive with what I wanted to collect. If they would ever allow the year Proof & Mint Sets that I collect I would jump right back into it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • Jo; Start with a registry set (Or several sets!) and put any grade you want in it. Then spend your remaining years upgrading the set.
I started two lo-grade MS sets, Buffalo nickels and Peace Dollars, across the street awhile back and I'm really enjoying it. Twowood image

  • That sounds like a great decision! You will learn a lot by looking for nice examples of coin in the grade you can afford. There are differences between coins of a given grade and it is fun to discover what you like.

And even if you think you hate Liberty Nickels I think you should have at least one image All nickels are good for you. If you think you won't like them just think of it as eating your spinich image
  • Joshiah,

You have already received some great advice. I would consider the "20th Century Type Set, No Gold (1900-1999). This set is a Basic Set requiring fewer of the same types of coins and also allows you to use Proof Coins (I like Proofs and you can get some of the later coins in higher grades in proof at a cheaper price).

If you decide to go this route, PM me with your address and I will send you a PCGS 1993S Silver Washington PR59DCAM to get you started. I will also PM you the PCGS cert. # so you can set up your registry set (you can set a set up with just one coin).

Please do not let this influence you if you decide to go with MS coins only.
Just have fun and let me know.

Also come visit us in the PCGS Set Registry Forum (click "Navigation", then the forum).

    Welcome to the boards,
    Larry

  • Oops,

    Thats a PR69DCAM Washington.
