Estate sales are a good way to pick up alot of coins at good prices sometimes, especially if you know some of the varieties and keys for particular series..........Someone here on the boards(I forget who) puts an ad in the local paper saying he wants to buy old coin collections, you might try that route.

i am not a dealer nor an avid collector

but from my limited experiences in the coin game

as from a collectors point of view one of the best ways if MAYBE NOT THE BEST way

to acquire monster exceptionally eye appealling coins " that one in a million coin"

is to find and work with a trusted dealer that has 100% knowledge reliability and responsibility/intergrity

and spends time at all the major shows/auctions and has hundreds of contacts offering him all the new fresh deals! and has been in the business for a long period of time

    John,

We acquire most of our coins at major shows.

We also buy a good number of them from existing clients who had purchased them from us; from new clients; through public auction; locally and through the mail from other dealers and, under certain conditions, over the internet.

You can pretty much find anything and everything via the internet, but experience is a big help and never buy anything without a return privilege. Coin shows, especially majors, are not only fun but you get a chance to see them first hand and hopefully compare to others available on the floor. Developing a relationship with a trusted dealer is good too. Good luck

My best source is to buy back coins that I have places years ago with collectors.....you know the saying "what goes around, comes around" Jon

  • Thanks guys,

I'm looking forward to the Long Beach show. As a newcomer I've been buying and selling alittle bit for the last 3 months but I've not left my home to see another "live" human being!! I did visit the local dealer but he wasn't what I would call the "chatty" type.

The internet is incredible for research and learning it allows me to do, but it makes me somewhat reliant and lazy I think.

Will enjoy getting away from the computer. (Should be cheaper then our $1500 weekends in vegas!)

  • Hi -- I asked my local dealer this question not long ago, in modified form: he buys a lot from people who walk into his shop and from local shows. I asked which source was better: walk-ins or the shows. He replied that it is the walk-ins, like 60-40 or 65-35. The reason is that his location is very good -- it's at a major y-intersection in my town. And although he is not the original owner of the shop, there has been a coin shop at that storefront for over 20 years.

I have a coin store and purchase coins daily from 2c wheaties on up.

The vast majority of the best coins that I offer are either purchased from clients, or in most cases, offered on their behalf on a commission basis. Many have been clients for a long time and realize the value of being represented rather that selling outright.

I attend shows and purchase from other dealers, and from the public there as well.

In years past, when I did not have a store, I purchased a great deal of material at public auction. This was at a time when they were not as popular or as frequent as they are now. Today, it is a full time job, just being able to attend and purchase at auctions.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
