resizing images for posting purposes?

lavalava Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭
I need help. I have a digital camera, and would like to post an image here. I learned that I need a hosting service, so I signed up for free with imagestation. However, I don't know how to resize. It seems like I need to resize before I can post here. Any thoughts?

  • You'll need image editing software if you don't already have it.

Moreover... convert your images to paletted 8-bit as well.

Really cuts down the file size. image

If you have no editing software, you can use Microsoft Paint. Load your picture, go in to "Image" and than "Stretch/Skew" and enter the horizontal and vertical percentages of the original that you would like to shrink it to.

  • Hey Dan, I use Adobe Photoshop. Could you elaborate on the palleted 8 bit that you mentioned? Thanks, Ken
  • ksteelheader, I'm not sure how Adobe refers to it - I use Corel Webmaster Photopaint -

But... you should be able to convert the images from 24-bit color, to paletted 8-bit, or grayscale, etc. May have to look for the option - but as expensive as that package is - I'd virtually guarantee it's there.

Esentially, what it does is goes through the image and eliminates all colors that aren't in the image from the palette. This makes a HUGE difference in image size, without compromising its quality.

If you use Photoshop just use the "Image Size" menu choice. I usually set a width of 350 pixels per side of coin (you can see a few examples over in that Buffalo nickel thread). Also, choose an 8-bit image. With both sides of the coin in the pic I have 700 wide, 350 high then it should end up about 100k. If you want it less, make it a bit smaller....
