Nice luster. Is the hair over the brow crisp? If so, MS-62. If rubbed, AU-58.

Nice coin overall. I like it.

RYK, thanks for the compliment! This coin is just too close for me too call but I am thinking AU58 but a low MS grade would not suprise me as it does have good luster in the right places. It's worth pretty good money in a 62 holder so a 62 would make my day- oh yeah it's on it's way to NGC along with a couple more $10 liberty's and a few $5 liberty's. mike

I'd guess 62, unless that's wear in the hair over the ear, then 58. On just one guess I'd go with 62.

      Darktone:

Its a nice coin. With the usual disclaimer about grading the photo/scan and not the actual coin, it looks as if there is enough chatter in the fields to warrant an AU58 grade. Its close, but I think it falls alittle short from an ms60/61. Whatever, the outcome, its still a keeper.

Thanks guy's. It actually looks semi prooflike in person. I'll be sure to post the grade when I get it. mike image

If the surfaces are semi PL, chatter and little inperfections are just highlighted and even more visible. Maybe MS is appropriate.

      Darktone,

Where do you buy raw gold (not specifically--I do not want to scioop your source)? I am thinking of making my first adventure into rare raw gold (via an upcoming auction) but quite frankly I am a bit afraid.

RYK- from reading your posts on this forum you seem very knowledgeable about gold coins and you should not be afraid to bid. I get stuck with junk every once in while from an auction but I usually don't talk about that end of itimage. mike
    • MS-63 I've seen coins that look worse than that get an MS grade.

I like the luster on it. Makes me think 62, though, cause of the ticks. But overall I think it's attractive. I've been fortunate on my raw gold purchases, but I'm still wary of spending too much on raw gold.

I'd say MS61, but with raw gold there is always the "Cleaned or Whizzed" option...

Looks unc from the picture. I'd guess MS61-62, but the grading services usually grade these higher than me, so they'll probably say MS63.

That would be great to get a 63 as i think there have only been a couple certified at 63 but I think I will just expect an AU58 so I don't get my hopes up. mike image

NGC just posted the grades on some of my gold coins and the $10 1884-S did very well along with some other very nice grades. I cracked the $5 1902-S out of an ACG MS63 holder and it got the 63 it deserved- I'll post a picture later and I think you will agree. Here's the whole submission. Mike image
        001 1899 $10 MS 62

        002 1884 S $10 MS 61

        003 1882 $10 MS 62

        004 1902 S $5 MS 63

        005 1893 S $5 MS 58

        006 1893 $5 MS 64
