Shows/auctions that are “just for dealers”

I occasionally read about shows or auctions that are open to dealers only. It seems to me that the more competition for coins, the higher the price they’ll sell for (right?). So why would someone hold an event where just dealers are invited?

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

<< <i>These are not shows in the truest sense. They are more trading platforms that are live and in person. Most of the attendees at these shows do not have the patience for the retail public and just want to do business with each other on a wholesale basis. They have not embraced the importance of the future for numismatics and are just focused on the present. >>
I agree with Julian.
Of course, now I'm off the show and auction circuit, working at a coin shop. I'm guilty of having spent the majority of my career focused on the present/wholesaling.
I enjoy reading Julian's posts. I am glad he has joined the forum to offer his viewpoints. My one regret is that I did not spend more time at the coin shows and auctions learning from Julian when I was younger. At least I was smart enough to spend time learning parts of the coin business with Al Johnbrier and his wonderful family when I was attending the Lanham, MD shows in the 1970s & 1980s.
