Here’s a 1788 New Jersey Copper. Do you think it’s nice, or could I do better?

There’s some pitting around where the date is that obscures the “17” in 1788. I’ve looked at several other New Jersey Coppers, and many seem to have pitted planchets. I won this one from a Heritage auction a while ago for about $420. This was the first coin to have E Pluribus Unum on it; therefore, I think it’s special.

If poor planchet quality is the norm for this type, then I won’t worry about it. Can anyone who’s familiar with colonials comment?

Thanks,

Dan

  • Looks reasonably good to me. They generally don't come like Kennedys.

sorry to rant again, but pcgs too often grades these stupidly. but IF this coin has a full date (looks like 2 missing digits in the digi-pic), decent surfaces, all shield lines, & at least an attempt at a decent rim, VF seems reasonable to me. it's a $400 coin, imo.

strong suggestion: ignore the numerics on the grades they give for these. there is NO standard for differentiating "VF-20" from "VF-25" from "VF-30". absurd for pcgs to act like there is.

your best bet: buy you colonials from a dealer w/ actual experience in 'em.
