Guess the Grade - 1925 Peace

Received this in the mail today. Kinda ugly. It is in an old PCGS holder. Possible upgrade? Test your grading skills.

  • I would guess a 64 but since you say it has upgrade possiblilities i'll say MS-63

I think the color downgrades it. But the surfaces seem good. So I'll go with 63. Although I think technically it's a 64. I'm unsure how PCGS would deduct for the color.

Lori, just to give you an example of the old wise tale that older holders mean possible upgrades.

I was just at a shop looking at a ngc 34d ms65 Washington quarter, there was also the same coin graded by pcgs in the old rattle holder, by far the ngc coin was much cleaner for the grade. Most of the ones in older holders have been upgraded years ago. Not to say you won't find any. But just didn't want you to buy older holders thinking they are upgrade possibilities just by the holder.

  • Well I guess it is pretty obvious since you all guessed MS63. I bought this because I liked it. It is kinda ugly toning but it is different. I did not buy it to upgrade. I am just trying to learn.

  • I think it is cool, the dark toning pattern around liberty and the nice green on the rev. I dont think its ugly at all.

Peace dollars are always annoying to try to grade. I'd say it was more fortune than skill here. image At least for me!

Well, nobody is going to say, that coin was dipped image I agree with the MS63 grade. There are no major marks and the strike is good for a peace dollar. It just lacks eye appeal due to the toning and that brings it down to a 63. The 1925 is not too difficult so you should able to find better examples.
