Need a little advice on substance on coin surface

Can someone advise me on taking the greenish substance off of this coin? Can I dip it in Acetone? If I dip it in Acetone then how do I rinse it afterwards. Full details would help as I have never cleaned or dipped a coin.

thanks

  • verdigris...and I'll let someone with more experience tell you how to get it off. Dipping copper is a delicate process, so take extreme care.

    Good luck with it.

To me, the green stuff looks like verdigris. I've had some luck removing small amounts from older copper with Blue Ribbon coin conitioner.

I applied it gently with a Q-tip and let it soak in for a bit, then added more and lightly massaged the blemish. Then I removed the excess Blue Ribbon from the coin by blotting it with a cotton cloth.

You don't need to dry off acetone. Remove it from the dip and it will dry by itself in an instant.

Acetone likely won't remove this as I belive it to be verdigris, as has been mentioned already by others. Verdigris is more or less copper sulfate. Also, Greg is correct about acetone in that acetone is extremely volatile and will evaporate almost instantly from a coin after it is immersed in it.

Tom is correct, this is verdigris and acetone will not remove it. The only thing that will remove it is MS70, but that might damage the coin in the process; therefore, I would recommend doing nothing.

I would not do anything to the coin, leave it be.
