If you were on the Darkside...

...you'd be able to pick up coins like this for the same price as a G-4 89-CC Morgan.....I'll take the thaler thank you!

I beat out three dealers including Staples and JPater from Germany. It is my understanding that most of the finer pieces such as this are finding their way back to Germany because of new interest in the coins.

Regensberg no date (1783) thaler, D-2617 KM-346, Almost Uncirulated. Very rare, large (43 mm) with light grey and gold toning and only some trivial marks. The fields are somewhat reflective. Spectacular city view reverse.

    Nice coin!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • What US coin could you pick up for the same price as the spectacular Gothic Crown in your sig, Scott?
  • I would rather have the CC morgan. Sorry but there is but a drop of Darkside in my veins.

  • So, the darkside is non-US coinage. Right?

Yes, yes, I know. Still waiting for the mental upgrade. Backordered.

Now, if you could talk pcgs into forming a registry for those coins, well, then you'd have competition.............oh yeah, only for the examples worthy of a plastic grade. image

    Beautiful coin.

Man!! That's a really pretty coin! It looks PL and is over 200 years old and even has some nice periph tone. The artistic qualites of that thaler are outstanding. Makes US Proofs look like a stick in the mud with their bad flat ugly eagle or dead presidents head in the middle of a big flat field.
Thanks for showing us your nice coin, now begone back to the DarkSide and take your Master Askari with you.

  • Best thing about the darkside is that you can get great coins for a little cash. I just got a great city view coin like Scott's but it's the size of a silver 3 cent coin. BU, mintage of only a few hundred thousand and from 1839 for only $20 and not hundreds like the silver 3 cent.

An AU50 93-S Morgan would be one example...or an MS61 21-S Walker would be another. These of course would not be toned monsters either.

I picked up a nice Proof 65 of a pre 1933 German gold coin from Northeastcoins two or three years ago for a fraction of what a similar US proof would cost. They seem to get a lot of the "darkside coins" if you are looking for non-US coins.

How many toned US monsters comparable to this coin could you pick up for under $100.00?

Darkside is generally non-US and non-Canadian. Canadian is considered grayside.
